The book is intended as an advanced undergraduate or first-year graduate course for students from various disciplines, including applied mathematics, physics and engineering. It has evolved from courses offered on partial differential equations (PDEs) over the last several years at the Politecnico di Milano. These courses had a twofold purpose: on the one hand, to teach students to appreciate the interplay between theory and modeling in problems arising in the applied sciences, and on the other to provide them with a solid theoretical background in numerical methods, such as finite elements. Accordingly, this textbook is divided into two parts. The first part, chapters 2 to 5, is more elementary in nature and focuses on developing and studying basic problems from the macro-areas of diffusion, propagation and transport, waves and vibrations. In turn the second part, chapters 6 to 11, concentrates on the development of Hilbert spaces methods for the variational formulation and the analysis of (mainly) linear boundary and initial-boundary value problems.
This book aims to attract researchers and practitioners who are working in information technology and computer science. This edited book is about basics and high-level concepts regarding blockchain technology and application, multimedia security, information processing, security of network, cloud and IoT, cryptography and information hiding, cyber-security and evidence investigations, and learning and intelligent computing. It is becoming increasingly important to develop adaptive, intelligent computing-centric, energy-aware, secure, and privacy-aware mechanisms in high-performance computing and IoT applications. The book serves as a useful guide for industry persons and also helps beginners to learn things from basic to advance in the area of better computing paradigm. Our aim is intended to provide a platform for researchers, engineers, academicians as well as industrial professionals from all over the world to present their research results in security-related areas. We believe that this book not only presents novel and interesting ideas but also will stimulate interesting discussions from the participants and inspire new ideas.
This book is a reflection on contemporary computational design thinking at the intersection of architecture, urban design, and landscape architecture, in a time marked by complex challenges like climate change, urbanization and population growth. Based on a critical rethinking of the notion of ground and the relation between the manmade and the natural environment, an understanding of architecture as regenerative practice is proposed. It aims at a built environment as landscape, at an architecture of prosthetic nature. The design approach is illustrated by a number of design experiments conducted within a studio setting and complemented by a series of conversations with leading experts on sustainable design and landscape architecture.
The second edition of this book systematically summarizes the latest research findings on high-speed railway track dynamics, made by the author and his research team over the past decade. It explores cutting-edge issues concerning the basic theory of high-speed railways, covering the dynamic theories, models, algorithms and engineering applications of the high-speed train and track coupling system.Presenting original concepts, systematic theories and advanced algorithms, the book places great emphasis on the precision and completeness of its content. The chapters are interrelated yet largely self-contained, allowing readers to either read through the book as a whole or focus on specific topics. It also combines theories with practice to effectively introduce readers to the latest research findings and developments in high-speed railway track dynamics. It offers a valuable resource for researchers, postgraduates and engineers in the fields of civil engineering, transportation, highway and railway engineering.
This book gathers peer-reviewed contributions submitted to the 21st European Conference on Mathematics for Industry, ECMI 2021, which was virtually held online, hosted by the University of Wuppertal, Germany, from April 13th to April 15th, 2021. The works explore mathematics in a wide variety of applications, ranging from problems in electronics, energy and the environment, to mechanics and mechatronics. Topics covered include: Applied Physics, Biology and Medicine, Cybersecurity, Data Science, Economics, Finance and Insurance, Energy, Production Systems, Social Challenges, and Vehicles and Transportation. The goal of the European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry (ECMI) conference series is to promote interaction between academia and industry, leading to innovations in both fields. These events have attracted leading experts from business, science and academia, and have promoted the application of novel mathematical technologies to industry. They have also encouraged industrial sectors to share challenging problems where mathematicians can provide fresh insights and perspectives. Lastly, the ECMI conferences are one of the main forums in which significant advances in industrial mathematics are presented, bringing together prominent figures from business, science and academia to promote the use of innovative mathematics in industry.
This book investigates human-machine systems through the use of case studies such as crankshaft maintenance, liner piston maintenance, and biodiesel blend performance. Through mathematical modelling and using various case studies, the book provides an understanding of how a mathematical modelling approach can assist in working out problems in any industrial-oriented activity.Mathematical Modelling: Simulation Analysis and Industrial Applications details a data analysis approach using mathematical modelling sensitivity. This approach helps in the processing of any type of data and can predict the result so that based on the result, the activity can be controlled by knowing the most influencing variables or parameters involved in the phenomenon. This book helps to solve field and experimental problems of any research activity using a data-based modelling concept to assist in solving any type of problem.Students in manufacturing, mechanical, and industrial engineering programs will find this book very useful. This topic has continued to advance and incorporate new concepts so that the manufacturing field continues to be a dynamic and exciting field of study.
The book is a collection of high-quality peer-reviewed research papers presented at the 18th International Symposium of Organizational Sciences (SymOrg 2022) held in Belgrade, Serbia, from June 11 to June 14, 2022. The aim of the book is providing stimulative framework for readers to explore viable alternatives and indicate implications for the post-pandemic world. Researchers from academia and industry present their original work focusing on different aspects of sustainable management and digital transformation including blockchain technology, business analytics, e-business, innovation, digital operations and logistics management, financial industry, public administration, lean business systems, digital transformation projects, human resources, marketing and communication, and quality and standardization. The chapters are useful for industry experts, research institutions, universities, and all others who share a common interest in contemporary organizational sciences.
This book presents the latest accomplishments in Novikov/conformal gearing as well as high-conformal gearing. It is focused primarily on strength calculation of gear teeth and the manufacturing of gears for Novikov/conformal and high-conformal gearing along with a brief discussion of achievements in the modern theory of gearing. The modern theory of gearing is the foundation of all optimal designs of gears, gear-sets, and transmissions of all known designs, as well as, of all those to be developed in the future. As even a small improvement in efficiency on a single gear can represent a significant cost saving, given the millions of gears used in industry every year, this volume provides the design and manufacturing engineer in invaluable resource.
