With meticulous preparation spanning 20 months, I embarked on my journey with a hundred items packed, ready to traverse from Germany to the West Coast of America. My quest was to explore the world, immerse myself in diverse cultures, uncover the mysteries of Eskimo cuisine, and confront the legendary and feared Faroe Islands. Although faced with numerous dangers, genuine fear gripped me only once. Yet, the thought of surrender never crossed my mind.During long, perilous flights over icy expanses, unexpected encounters with whales reassured me that my choices were right. My little red plane startled seals on ice floes, touched down on closed runways, approached erupting volcanoes, and soared over the residences of American ex-presidents. The physical and mental strain led to significant weight loss, but each challenge was met with unwavering determination. A timely intervention by a policeman rescued me from an awkward situation and narrowly avoiding an illegal parking charge for an airplane added to the adventure.A windfall in Las Vegas provided enough funds for a barrel of AvGas in Canada, yet I squandered fees at an FBO for a simple hug after a particularly taxing flight. In Iceland, aggressive birds and a night in a dubious hostel were I narrowly escaped. From flying over the polar ice in the Arctic to crossing the Nevada desert, I navigated through icy clouds, turbulent Rocky Mountains, persistent headwinds, inclement weather, phone malfunctions, and technical breakdowns.Scarcity of aviation fuel, unavailable hotel rooms, and the absence of internet were commonplace challenges. A surreal encounter with a fata morgana added to the unpredictable journey. Landings consistently led to new friendships and unexpected assistance. Flying, I realized, is a skill, but the decisions made during such a journey transform a person. This expedition made me feel more alive than ever before, a personal and self-discovery odyssey where I learned invaluable lessons that theory alone could never teach. It was a genuine adventure, perhaps one of the last of its kind, and I would embark on it again without hesitation.
“Will have river veterans nodding in agreement and surprise. I loved the journey." — Doug Stanton, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller, Horse Soldiers“An important contribution to the literature of exploration. This book had my pulse racing."— Peter Heller, author of The Dog Stars and The RiverA dramatic narrative tour of 10 of the world’s most incredible whitewater adventures—spanning 5 continents and 40 years—guided by a legendary whitewater trailblazerThis fascinating history of daring whitewater explorers stands alongside classic works on mountaineering, outdoor survival, and extreme sportsPerfect for fans of Jon Krakauer’s Into Thin Air and Candice Millard’s River of the GodsIn 10 thrilling real-life adventure stories, pioneering whitewater explorer Wick Walker examines what lured a generation of incredibly daring pioneers into some of Earth’s most wondrous yet forbidding river canyons:below Victoria Falls on the Zambezi, the Great Bend of the Tsangpo in Tibet, Tiger Leaping Gorge on the Yangtze, the flanks of Mount Everest, and more Loaded with great moments and personal stories, Walker details what these adventurers found there, and within themselves. The extraordinary characters, driven by different motives and visions, but united by their compulsion to seek the unknown and the pulse of free-flowing water, are as remarkable as the daunting geography and conditions they confront.Whitewater sport today stands side-by-side with mountaineering in participation and public attention, yet it has lagged in generating its own literature. Torrents As Yet Unknown helps fill that gap for readers interested in human drama played out against great natural challenges.Mountaineering history is deep and its literature rich, but whitewater adventurers approach and experience the same forbidding terrain from a different vantage, between the steep walls of their canyons and atop powerful torrents of cascading water.

A "thorough introduction" (Booklist) that provides a blueprint for studying abroad for prospective students. Making the Most of Study Abroad prepares students for a successful study abroad experience. Although study abroad programs usually have a pre-departure orientation, most of these are only a couple hours and are not able to sufficiently cover the myriad of questions that students and their parents have about study abroad. This book is designed to fill that gap and inform the reader on many crucial elements that can make the difference between a fantastic study abroad trip and a lackluster stay. While this book is principally designed around the idea of study abroad, it can also serve as a guide for travelers planning an extended stay abroad. From the authors' own experiences as study abroad participants, study abroad program leaders, and study abroad researchers, the reader will learn vital information about every step of creating an outstanding study abroad trip, from pre-departure to the return home. Covered are the following topics: choosing the right program, understanding practical elements (for example, obtaining health care while abroad), deciding what to pack, dealing with culture shock, setting realistic goals and outcomes for the program, understanding necessary language preparation, studying abroad beyond college, maximizing time while abroad, making the shift back to the home country, and using study abroad experiences in one's future career.Without the proper preparations and continued support while abroad, students may flounder and find the experience less than what they dreamt. Utilizing the advice in this book, students can go abroad with goals, strategies, and information that will help them make study abroad the experience of a lifetime.

What if you could freeze an unforgettable year and go back and visit the people and experiences any time you wanted? The school year 1978-1979 is just such a year. We lived in the small village of Akutan, located in the isolated Fox Islands in the Aleutian Chain of Alaska. As we taught Aleut children in grades 1-12 in the small one room school, and visited the elders, on this island with an active volcano, our lives were changed. Luke Shelikoff, the last Aleut Chief, deserves such immortality, for his "Williwaws of Wisdom" to help and encourage future generations.
In this thrilling work--a blend of history, science, nature writing, and environmentalism--acclaimed writer James Bradley plunges into the unknown to explore the deepest recesses of the natural world.Seventy-one percent of the earth's surface is ocean. These waters created, shaped, and continue to sustain not just human life, but all life on Planet Earth, and perhaps beyond it. They serve as the stage for our cultural history--driving human development from evolution through exploration, colonialism, and the modern era of global leisure and trade. They are also the harbingers of the future--much of life on Earth cannot survive if sea levels are too low or too high, temperatures too cold or too warm. Our oceans are vast spaces of immense wonder and beauty, and our relationship to them is innate and awe inspired.Deep Water is both a lyrically written personal meditation and an intriguing wide-ranging reported epic that reckons with our complex connection to the seas. It is a story shaped by tidal movements and deep currents, lit by the insights of philosophers, scientists, artists and other great minds. Bradley takes readers from the atomic creation of the oceans, to the wonders within, such as fish migrations guided by electromagnetic sensing. He describes the impacts of human population shifts by boat andspeaks directly and uncompromisingly to the environmental catastrophe that is already impacting our lives. It is also a celebration of the ocean's glories and the extraordinary efforts of the scientists and researchers who are unlocking its secrets. These myriad strands are woven together into a tapestry of life that captures not only our relationship with the planet, but our past, and perhaps most importantly, what lies ahead for us.A brilliant blend of Robert MacFarlane's Underland, Susan Casey's The Underworld, and Simon Winchester's Pacific and The Atlantic, Deep Water taps into the essence of our plant and who we are.
I Came In Here For A Reason is a compilation of 26 short stories written to evoke resonance for all kinds of readers. There are stories about family, childhood memories, keeping busy in retirement, and the gift of our favorite pets, like dogs and cats and what they bring to our lives. Many of the stories are a self-deprecating and humorous look at everyday life from cleaning the garage to trying to decide if you have a problem with your memory, and why it feels like you always learn everything the hard way. There is insightful commentary on everything from earthworms to mosquitos, a happier way to mow the lawn, making meaningful but weird new year resolutions, and even an up-close look at golf and its relationship to four letter words. This is the perfect book for your bathroom. It will give you something to look forward to in there. Or your guest bedroom. But don't blame the book if your guests don't want to leave until they've finished it.
