The Hippie Trail, that long land route to India that was a rite of passage for so many western hippies and other young adventurers from the 1950s to 1979.Simon Sharpe was a young adventurer and travelled the route in the summer of 1974 on a small budget and solo. One year later he sat down to record his extraordinary travels before memory faded. He bring us his descriptive memories of the countries, cheap hotels, the food, the cultural divides, the local people and the western adventurers for whom this was a significant part of their youth experience. Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and on to India, Simon's travelogue is full of anecdotes and sharp observations of the people he met. Simon also includes stories of adventurers from his own family history in India and Afghanistan to create a fascinating refection on his own motives for travelling. He asks the awkward question; to what extent freedom-loving western youth, travelling through those Muslim countries may have inadvertently changed the politics of the region and helped bring in strictly observant Islamic governments?

In July 2022, a young man from a small-town in Canada walked from Vancouver British Columbia to San Fransisco. His name was Fisher Monahan, and he kept a journal. He had gotten rid of nearly all of his belongings, bought a backpack, and hit the road. Four months later, after arriving in San Francisco, he would compile his journal full of drawings and notes into a book. Immediately after graduating from high school in June of 2022, Fisher flew out to Abbotsford BC and began his walk at Washington's northern border. Inspired by the likes of Chris McCandless and Everett Ruess, Fisher was on a mission to roam free and rejoice in the raw, unfiltered experiences that nature (and sometimes interesting people) presented. Walking long distances in remote lands, carrying only the essentials, these pages are filled with everything from innocent musings to field notes and illustrations of things Fisher has encountered in his travels.

If you can solve the hard situations abroad, you can solve anything. It helps create cultural sensitivity which leads to better communications and helps to understand international conflicts. For example, people in some countries like Spain take a siesta in the middle of the day. First I thought they are very lazy. But it's not true. They do this to spend more time with their families and to eat together because family is more important for them than work. It made me think. It's the easiest way to learn a foreign language.
