Since the dawn of humanity, people have traveled in search of meaning and to petition for worldly and otherworldly blessings. In the twenty-first century, the number of people traveling to religious sacred sites on pilgrimage has increased more than at any point in human history. An increased demand for pilgrimage routes and trails with the spiritual rather than the religious walker in mind, has also led various enterprising groups and individuals to develop entirely new pilgrimage routes and trails. This book highlights this new chapter in pilgrimage and trail development with essays by pilgrimage scholars and practitioners working in over ten countries. These include an examination of circular pilgrimage in The Netherlands, weird or «antipilgrimages» in the UK, and the revitalization of ancient trails along the Old Way to Canterbury, in the Baltic States, and on the Kumano Kodo in Japan. Entirely new trails include the Sufi Trail in Turkey, the Western Front Way in Europe, the Abraham Path in Southwest Asia, the Mormon Canadian Trail, and various new religious-themed trails in Lebanon. Human rights pilgrimages include one focused on peace building in Indigenous Australia, another on Indigenous settler pilgrimage protocols in Canada, and an emancipation pilgrimage along the Underground Railroad in the United States.
In this charming travelogue, Lynn Dryden recounts the highs and lows of walking the Camino, in the hope that it will inspire others to follow their dreams.¿Jim Dryden dreamed of walking the Camino de Santiago - the famous pilgrimage walk in Galicia, Spain. When he died from prostate cancer, his wife Lynn, who wasn't much of a walker, decided to take on the challenge herself. Walking the Camino taught Lynn so much, she wanted to share her experiences, in the hope that they would inspire others to follow their dreams. This book tells the story of her walk, from when the idea first came to her, through the highs and lows of the walk, to getting Jim's name added to her Compostela and then arriving back home.

Walking Hadrian's Wall, Wallsend to Bowness-on-Solway takes you on my walking trek along Hadrian's Wall and across England in the late summer of 2022. I walked along the famous Hadrian's Wall built in AD 122 by Emperor Hadrian. Over a period of 10 days, I crossed the country. Starting on the east coast at Wallsend I walked to Bowness-on-Solway on the west coast. The journey has been recreated with watercolor illustrations and daily descriptions of the adventure. Over the 84-mile journey, I met many wonderful people and experienced Roman and English history. Follow along with me as I "hike my own hike" and visit Heddon-on-the-Hill, Chollerford, the Twice Brewed Inn, and many more places. Including visiting the Roman Fort at Vindolanda. The book is filled with original watercolor illustrations by J. Bruce Jones. Also included in the book is a Frequently Asked Questions section on the trip, the kind of pack I used, lessons I learned, and much more. - Walking Hadrian's Wall- Day 1, Arrive in Newcastle and overnight, Hotel Indigo, walked to Wallsend, Metro for the return- Day 2, Wallsend to Heddon-on-the-Hill, Ironsign Country House- Day 3, Heddon-on-the-Hill to Corbridge, The Angle of Corbridge- Day 4, Corbridge to Chollerford, Simonburn Tearooms- Day 5, Chollerford to Once Brewed, Twice Brewed Inn- Day 6, Once Brewed to Gilsland, The Hollies on the Wall- Day 7, Gilsland to Brampton, Scotch Arms Mews- Day 8, Brampton to Carlisle, Howard Lodge- Day 9, Carlisle to Bowness-on-Solway, Wallsend BnB>Includes a Section of Frequently Asked Questions About the Trip- Which way did your hike, east to west?- What was your itinerary, bed, and breakfasts you stayed in?- What kind of pack did you bring, your main pack, and day pack?- What kind of gear did you bring?- Clothing and footwear?- What did you carry in your day pack?- What lessons did I learn?- What were some of your favorite places?
I Should Have Left the Whiskey is the first book in the Rambling On trilogy - compelling tales from a time when motorcycles were left in the shed and global exploration slowed to the pace of cycling. These diaries divulge two very different journeys in Asia: because progressing into enlightened India required some back-pedalling through darkest Thailand en route to China. After impulsively purchasing a bicycle in Bangkok and taking to the frantic city streets, Graham was hit by the realisation that life in the fast lane could have an impact on his health.Pedalling away from the madding crowd, he hauled his heavy load to mountain settlements lost somewhere in time. Desperate and dehydrated, he was subjected to all that the lonely road bestows upon the soul.It soon became apparent that whiskey was not the best choice of refreshment. However, he rebelliously refused to abandon the bottle or the mission, keeping his glassy eyes fully focused on what was ahead.A year later, having eliminated some of the heavier baggage from that journey, he found himself in southern India. Surely, this coast-hugging, palm-shaded backwater route would be a breeze ... but the easy road is not always the right path.Had reckless decisions taken him beyond his abilities? With flashbacks, foresight and the riotous brutal honesty that is confined to a diary, all will be revealed.
