Jamey Glasnovic's meandering journey to find solace in a chaotic world has already led him across three continents. Now, he finds himself in East Africa. As an atypical adventurer, Jamey Glasnovic was never likely to cross the high Arctic in search of records or glory or attempt new and audacious routes up remote peaks with hopes of writing his name in the annals of mountaineering lore. Truth be told, a dive bar in Kathmandu or Dar es Salaam counts as a good day out for this laid-back adventure enthusiast. But, a profound belief in the power of landscape continues to motivate him. A sense of place and a desire to understand the connection all humans have to their surroundings are what compel him to explore foreign cultures and unfamiliar terrain. In his third book, Everything Is Poa (poa means good in Swahili), Glasnovic commits to testing his physical limits beyond the comfort zone of the pub. Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro went a long way in accomplishing that goal. But, it was the misadventures on his bicycle in Tanzania and Rwanda that helped define the journey. The warm and generous people he met along the way, along with the spectacular wildlife that is part of the African continent's allure, are what stole his heart in the end.

In the mid-1880s, Johnny Lind, a teenager from Pond Mills, Ontario, struck out for adventure and wealth. After a decade working as a railroader in the United States, Johnny headed north, to Yukon and Alaska, and he was mining gold nearby when the Klondike Gold Rush began. As a "sourdough," albeit an unsung one-the nickname for miners who had survived an entire winter in the North-Lind's story goes largely unrecognized in the lore of the era, his understated demeanor overshadowed by the larger-than-life characters that dominate the history books. But he kept journals recording his adventures in the Klondike, and these form an invaluable personal record. His stories shed light on the people and events of the gold rush, from the perspective of an everyman who wound up striking it rich. Here, Johnny Lind's grandson Phil Lind shares his grandfather's fascinating story, along with his love of the Klondike, the history of the gold rush, the colourful players in that famed period, and the peoples and land affected by the legendary stampede for wealth.

Kilimanjaro towers above the diverse nature of East Africa, dwarfing some of the largest landliving mammals in the world. But even as the most prominent mountain of its continent, its summit stands accessible to most. Situated in the centre of a national park, the journey to the mountain takes challengers through iconic, wild Africa. This book tells the mountain's tale, from its formation and through history, and provides insight into the nature at its roots and slopes. The book also provides information on some of the many routes up the mountain and guidance to tackle the climate and extreme altitude climbers will meet on their way to the summit. The author has trekked and climbed for more than 45 years, has climbed 8,000-meter peaks, and has led hundreds of clients to the summit of Kilimanjaro on his numerous visits to "The Roof of Africa."

Schunkeln is awesome! Schunkeln is awesome!  After two best-selling books exploring the quirks of German culture, British author Adam Fletcher finds he's become a pundit for German life. Unsure about his position, and with severe doubts about his own expertise, he decides to take on a series of hilarious integration challenges. You'll learn why you shouldn't attend a Schützenfest, if you can neither drink nor march, what happens when someone of no musical talent creates a Schlager song and why it's not a good idea to Nordic Walk through Ballermann 6, Mallorca. Lovingly written, with a lot of British humor and avoiding the usual national clichés, he recounts his adventures of trying to become German. On the way, he reaffirms why this country and its inhabitants have such a special place in his heart.

The Nansen Photographs tells the story of Norwegian Arctic explorer Fridtjof Nansen and his ground-breaking effort to reach the North Pole in the specially-designed polarship Fram. The story starts when the plan for the expedition was launched in 1890 and continues until the end of Nansen's international lecture tour in 1897. We see how Nansen selected the cameras for the expedition, and photographs and information about the cameras themselves supplement this part. One chapter is dedicated to the early life of Nansen and another shows how the ideas for the expedition and the ship developed. We follow the construction of Fram through numerous letters between Nansen and the ship's designer and builder, Colin Archer, and five different sets of drawings of the vessel from the initial proposal to the final version are presented. The main elements of the book are every single recovered photograph taken during the expedition together with personal diary entries from Nansen and seven of his crew members about the situation when the photographs were taken. This brings new life to previously known photographs and introduces the reader to hundreds of unknown photographs from the expedition. Due to the large format of the book, the smaller details in the photographs give new insight into the work and daily life on board, the equipment and the clothing. Opposing diary entries from Nansen and the men about the same situations show that life on board was not always easy. Nansen's lack of empathy and practical skills caused frustration among the men, and several of them resorted to fists to sort out their differences. When Nansen leaves the ship for his legendary 18 month journey with Hjalmar Johansen towards the North Pole and Franz Josef Land, we follow both Nansen and Johansen and the crew left on board through their photographs and diaries. The return to Norway and the spectacular celebration along the entire Norwegian coast from Vardø in the north to K
