Dansk Udtaleordbog bruger international lydskrift (IPA) og er et uundværligt værktøj, når man skal lære dansk som fremmedsprog. Der er ingen normerede regler for dansk udtale, men mange holdninger til, hvordan dansk skal lyde. Målet med Dansk Udtaleordbog er at gengive den upåfaldende normaludtale, dvs. fravær af hørbart geografisk tilhørsforhold og stigmatiserende eller forældet udtale, ved at samle op på flere årtiers udtaleforandringer. Using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), Contemporary Danish Pronunciation is pivotal in learning Danish as a second language. It provides today’s unmarked pronunciation, i.e. absence of dialect and stigmatizing or archaic cues. Contrary to popular belief, Danish pronunciation is predictable from the written word, however based on a deep phonological analysis rather than morphology. Ruben Schachtenhaufen (f. 1975), ph.d., fonetiker, forsker og underviser i dansk udtale, lydskrift, fonetik og fonologi ved Københavns Universitet. Han står bag schwa.dk, udtaleordbog.dk og bogen Ny dansk fonetik (2023), som følger konventionerne i det internationale fonetiske alfabet (IPA). Schachtenhaufen har udviklet værktøjer, der på baggrund af fonologiske og morfologiske regler kan omdanne skrevne ord til lydskrift, som afspejler dansk udtalevariation. Michael Bach Ipsen (f. 1986) har redigeret flere af Modersmål-Selskabets udgivelser om bl.a. dialekter og nabosprog og er forfatter til en illustreret ABC på vendelbomål, Michaels ABC på wæjlbomol (2024). Med sin baggrund i sprogvidenskab fra Københavns og Lunds Universitet har han bidraget til Dansk Udtaleordbog med et både diakront og synkront syn på variation i dansk. Mikael Fabrin (f. 1971) har siden 2019 undervist i dansk som andetsprog på Danmarks Pædagogiske Universitet og på sprogcentre helt fra niveau A1 til B2, hvor retningslinjer for naturlig dansk udtale er et vigtigt hjælpemiddel. Under inddragelse af sin undervisningserfaring har han som led i sin specialisering i funktionel-kognitiv lingvistik ved Københavns Universitet medvirket til udarbejdelsen af Dansk Udtaleordbog.
