Addresses recommendations of the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences for the preparation of teachers demonstrating how abstract mathematical concepts can be motivated by concrete activities. Such an approach makes it easier for the teachers to grasp the meaning of generalization and formal proof.

"What colors might await in a leafy forest, a berry-stained back alley, a seaweedy beach, or even the dark corners of an ordinary fridge? With this book as a guide, curious young wizards can make natural confetti, unlock the hidden color power inside a leaf, and craft a paintbrush wand. They'll brew magic potions from beets and acorn caps to produce their own colors, from the darkest black to the palest pink to invisible ink, then share their discoveries with friends, family, and the whole color-hungry human race. With whimsy and infectious enthusiasm, master ink maker Jason Logan explains the science of color while presenting 'quests,' recipes, and hands-on activities using materials kids can find in their own homes and neighborhoods"

Scientific Essays and Lectures by Charles Kingsley is a collection of essays and lectures on various scientific topics. The book is divided into three parts, each dealing with a different area of science. The first part covers geology, including essays on the formation of the earth, the age of the earth, and the history of the earth's surface. The second part covers biology, with lectures on the theory of evolution, the nature of life, and the relationship between science and religion. The third part covers physics, including lectures on the nature of light, the laws of motion, and the structure of matter. Throughout the book, Kingsley explores the relationship between science and religion, arguing that the two are not mutually exclusive but rather complementary. He also emphasizes the importance of scientific inquiry and discovery in advancing human knowledge and understanding of the natural world. Overall, Scientific Essays and Lectures is a thought-provoking and insightful exploration of some of the most important scientific topics of the 19th century. The superstitious man, according to him, after having washed his hands with lustral water--that is, water in which a torch from the altar had been quenched--goes about with a laurel-leaf in his mouth, to keep off evil influences, as the pigs in Devonshire used, in my youth, to go about with a withe of mountain ash round their necks to keep off the evil eye. If a weasel crosses his path, he stops, and either throws three pebbles into the road, or, with the innate selfishness of fear, lets someone else go before him, and attract to himself the harm which may ensue. He has a similar dread of a screech-owl, whom he compliments in the name of its mistress, Pallas Athene.

Drawing on a decade of teaching at Mexican universities, Ricardo Victoria-Uribe has teamed up with pharmaceutical chemist Martha Elba González-Alcaraz to create an introductory guide to sustainability, in an accessible way. Tapping into Science Fiction and Fantasy across several media formats, examining anime, books, movies, and TV, the authors have created a practical resource for students, writers, and readers alike, who want to know more about just how big a part sustainability plays in everyday life. And, most importantly, how the future of humanity on this planet depends on our engagement with it.

Children are remarkable for their ability to quickly and easily learn massive amounts of new information. It is proposed from recent research that the key behind this ability to rapidly process is the neurotransmitter GABA. Furthermore, functional MRI have proven children activate different and more regions of their brains than adults when they perform word tasks.* Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Why is it then if children's brains absorb information at a much faster rate than adults that they are so hard to teach at home? We have a theory... A collection of fun maths based cooking recipes that are predominantly healthy with a scattering of special treat recipes included. Nut and other common allergens are absent from the majority of sandwich fillings and school snacks however we ask that you review all recipes carefully if you have an allergy.
"Nebula means 'cloud' in Latin, but these little-known astronomical phenomena are different from Earth's clouds. They can be the last breaths of supernovas, spreading the elements of life far and wide, or they can be star nurseries, swirling molecules together to form stars and planets. In this gorgeous nonfiction look into the cosmos, the nebula narrator invites young astronomers to learn more about these immense space clouds, from how they form to what they do. Readers will be entranced by the vibrant illustrations, which incorporate real photographs of nebulae, and the poetic text, which reveals that we are all grown from scattered stardust. Rich back matter provides details about nebulae and how people have studied them, the nebulae pictured in the illustrations (listed as the 'cast'), and resources for further learning"--
