An American now residing in Costa Rica, Al Stites has lived a rich 88 years. His orientation toward thinking positively, regarding of what happens to him, has led him to an incredible 71 jobs, each of them providing him with more rich experiences and an interesting array of people. Many of the people that the author has worked with or for would be recognized by nearly anyone, ranging from Hal Holbrook to Ethel Kennedy to Prince Borghese of Italy. He has never taken a job because he had to or a job he has not liked. When he has become bored with a job or it has taken a turn to his disliking, he has simply moved on to the next job. Throughout his life, he has worked not for money but for happiness -- and he has had a happy life. How many of us can say the same?
What is it REALLY like to retire and live in Costa Rica? If you only went by what is written in travel guides and what is hyped by travel agents (and their promotional materials), the conclusion would have to be that Costa Rica is heaven on earth. Unfortunately, things in Costa Rica are simply not as they are presented in the travel books, and expatriates often have problems trying to establish a life there. After the third couple Alfred Stites knew decided to move to another Central (or South) American country simply because of the difficulties in Costa Rica, he decided to write about what it is really like to move to and live in this lovely country. This book is based on his own opinion and observation; he writes what he sees and knows. Also included in this book is a Supplement Section dealing with exactly the steps needed for a retiree seeking Pensionado Status in Costa Rica. For all of its challenges, where else can you find a country of: . exceptional natural beauty . very inexpensive modern housing . a delightful climate . a public transportation system that will take you anywhere you want to go Where you can live very comfortably on an income of $2000/month? Where? The place where they build: Sidewalks in the Jungle! Costa Rica!
