E un po' mortificata. Il mio sguardo penetrante passa dalla lista degli oggetti casalinghi, bicchieri, piatti, posate, alla lista del di lei volto: capelli, naso, bocca, ecc. Ma ella non resiste a lungo al mio esame: i suoi occhi devono essere di quelli secondo la prescrizione del dottor Pertusius perche si turbano subito, e dice: - Scusi bene, se non e scritto bene. - Oh, benissimo. Bicchieri, piatti, posate. Certo non e quella scrittura vibrante delle signorine della buona societa: e una scritturina come lei, e anche la voce e come lei: una tranquilla cantilena, un po' provinciale. Il volto e regolare, anche troppo, perche non ha nessuno di quei motivi decorativi su cui il desiderio si impiglia. E cosi liscio che anzi il desiderio vi scivola. Il romanzo di Alfredo Panzini, Santippe, è legato ovviamente alla moglie del filosofo Socrate. L'impressione è che l'autore cerchi di analizzare da diverse angolazioni le abitudini di Santippe e il suo comportamento nei confronti del marito, dei suoi discepoli e di altre persone; l'obiettivo è quello di verificare quanto sia credibile l'idea tradizionale di Santippe intesa come donna bisbetica e fastidiosa moglie e scoprire se invece fu vittima del filosofare del grande marito. Il romanzo, ambientato appunto nell' Antica Grecia, inizia con un ampia presentazione, che occupa l'intero primo capitolo, sulla grandezza della civiltà greca, intesa come era di giovinezza, di grandi uomini ma anche di grandi donne molte delle quali costituiscono un modello femminile con cui dovrebbero confrontarsi le donne, le ragazze, le mogli moderne. Il primo capitolo, come d'altra parte quasi l'intero libro, è caratterizzato da un'evidente, sferzante ironia, ma possiede anche con tono di malinconia, quasi di tristezza poiché quella grande epoca passata ormai si è conclusa, al posto di essa ve ne è una nuova, moderna, anzi, futurista, ma povera di quei valori tanto cari al nostro autore (che nel mondo moderno sembra trovarsi poco a suo agio, al punto di disprezzare le grosse automobili che si vanno affermando, per rimanere fedele alla sua vecchia bicicletta). Tornando a Santippe, nella finzione narrativa è lei stessa a parlare e raccontare le sue vicende a Panzini. Inizialmente essa risulta coerente con la rappresentazione tradizionale: è una donna irosa, dalla voce sgradevole e insopportabile (si veda l'iniziale invettiva che lei rivolge contro gli uomini) ma essa subisce un'evoluzione nel corso della storia diventando quasi vittima dell'irresponsabile Socrate che, dialogando in giro per Atene, non si rende conto che trascura la famiglia. Di questo dunque Santippe rimprovera al filosofo; rinfacciandogli in particolare il fatto che sta troppo lontano dai figli che stanno crescendo e soprattutto di non portare a casa soldi o almeno di che sfamare la famiglia; a un certo punto Santippe è costretta a mostrare a Socrate che mentre il suo rivale, Isocrate, si fa invece pagare, e ottiene denaro e successo, lui invece, non chiedendo alcun compenso, non solo fa patire la fame alla propria famiglia ma è condannato a rimanere rimane nell'oscurità. Queste sue parole (obiettivamente pronunciate in modo molto risentito e duro) vengono travisate dai discepoli del filosofo, che identificano Santippe come una sfruttatrice, materialista, attaccata più ai soldi che al bene e poco rispettosa del marito. In realtà lei, anche se lo dimostra a modo suo, è innamorata del suo filosofo. Lo si può riscontrare soprattutto alla conclusione del libro quando Santippe parla amorevolmente ai suoi figli del povero padre morto; essa è turbata dal rimorso per non essere riuscita a dissuadere suo marito dal bere il veleno. Poi però assume un tono fermo imponendo ai figli di non seguire le orme paterne. La Santippe descritta da Panzini, presenta alcune caratteristiche proprie di una donna moderna: capace di opporsi ai comportamenti sbagliati del marito, e di esprimere il proprio disagio senza preoccuparsi di come potrebbe reagire il mondo misantropo in cui vive. È dunque una donna sincera che finisce per sostituirsi a Socrate nel guidare la famiglia. Dunque Panzini, in questo libro, sembra aver rivalutato il ruolo di Santippe mostrandola sotto la luce di quella vera donna che molto probabilmente è stata. Trasformandosi in una sorta di avvocato è riuscito a far comprendere le motivazioni, le azioni e i comportamenti di una donna esasperata dal comportamento irresponsabile del marito. Nella sua accurata analisi dei sentimenti e delle vicende, Panzini può essere paragonato ai grandi tragediografi e filosofi dell'antichità. Giulia Cazzador
