"This is an absolutely brilliant book. If you really wants to learn more regarding OKRs in Agile and other important stuff related to it you must read this book. It's truly a master piece." "Super easy to read, with clear chapter summaries. Lots of solid content that is not hidden amongst fluff. Straight to the point and a must have for any agile practitioner curious about OKRs." "Allan's writing is perfect for busy managers who need to set objectives and form initiatives that satisfy diverse stakeholders. Plus, it doesn't sugar-coat OKRs - they are part of a management system - not a medicine. Overall, a wonderfully concise and easy to read guide to using OKRs. Highly recommended." OKRs are about goals bigger than the next story, or even epic. They prioritise purpose and strategy over the ever looming, high maintenance backlogs we all know too well. OKRs are important to agile teams because they deal with the big things, they inspire forward thinking, encourage engage senior leaders, and help debug strategy. Acclaimed author Allan Kelly describes why you should use OKRs, how to write them successfully, how to set measurable KRs, execute against OKRs in an agile environment to deliver outcomes, and the pitfalls and problems to avoid so you can deliver your outcomes. In this book he doesn't try to sell OKRs - others can tell you why OKRs are great. Allan describes his practical experience working with agile teams adopting OKRs, day-by-day, quarter-by-quarter. Unlike other books, this is not designed to sell you OKRs, Allan reveals decades of honest, hands on experience working with agile teams adopting OKRs, day-by-day, sprint-by-sprint, quarter-by-quarter. So you can get aligned, work seamlessly and hit goals efficiently.
Projects fail. Some say 40% of all IT projects fail, some say 70%. And it has been that way for years. Each project fails for its own reasons but they all share one thing in common: the Project Model. Could it be the project model itself which creates failure? In this tour de force Allan Kelly explains why the project model is a poor fit for managing software development. Working from industry recognized definitions of projects he describes how the model deviates from reality then goes on to discuss: - Why focusing on time, scope, and cost damages software, creates goal displacement and reduces quality.- How projects miss the bigger picture.- Why maximizing value demands work across projects.- When debt is good and how projects increase technical debt to the detriment of value delivery.>Projects end. Successful software continues. Twenty-first century digital businesses want to continue and grow. Online Reviews "If you are managing programmers, working with them directly or indirectly, or recently joined the profession, it is a must read. It explains how the maximise the value of the programmers work in the enterprise large or small, and how to avoid the trap of long-term planning in a world where the only constant is change.">"The project model does not fit the reality of managing software development. In this bracingly short book Allan provides an eloquent critique, landing his points well without waffle. Read this then the companion volume, Continuous Digital, which provides practical solutions to the problems uncovered here.">"An excellent book which thoughtfully critiques the "project" construct that we have all been conditioned to accept as "normal". This book is thought provoking, explaining Allan's views and experiences on how and why projects are harming the development of software. This book links in to Allan's other book "Continuous Digital" (This book provides the critique and rationale, which I believe Continuous Digital builds on). If you work on change projects the that involve, or are driven by, software.. then this book will be for you! It challenges thinking and provokes thought.">"This book is an excellent exploration of the short-sightedness of the project model for software, and should be essential reading for anyone involved in managing software development, delivery, or operations.">"A short, but enjoyable read. Allan covers, categorically, the thinking behind moving away from projects (as per the #noprojects conversation): where it's appropriate, why it works, and what we can do to move away from it. He defines what he means by a project (or rather uses the definitions defined by PMI and PRINCE2), and categorically dismantles the reasons behind using them in most modern contexts. From arguments of quality to economy, you'll be left with a solid understanding of why you probably don't want to use projects, and move towards continuous digital delivery. Well-structured, well-argued, and entertaining. A very worthwhile read."Amazon review - Gary F
As this still young century continues it has become clear that the business world is increasingly a digital world. The software companies of the last century are but the prototypes of the modern digital business. In the digital world, the business is technology, and technology is the business. Digitisation forces companies to rethink the way they organize themselves. Aligning software development and technology operations with business goals is just the start. Digitisation means management must embrace new paradigms for their own work - and let some old ones go. Agile software development was the first wave of process change for digital business. Now it is time for management thinking to change. Continuous Digital sets out a new management model for digital businesses. Continuous Digital takes Agile to the next level. Online Reviews "This book contains an absolute wealth of information, Concepts that underpin digital and Agile transformation. Great insights into strategy, capex, planning and many more. Fantastic nuggets of information that will make you look smart! A great book to keep by you an regularly refer to for it wealth of information.">"I found this book very interesting and full of information regarding Digital projects in many organisations. An excellent book to learn and understand regarding digital transformation of your organisation. A must read for IT Manager, Project Manager and Business Analyst and other IT professionals to gain more knowledge regarding Digital projects. Hope to read other books written by author to gain more knowledge.">"A handbook for how to really go about achieving better business outcomes, Allan presents sound, practical guidance (supported with relatable examples) on how to aspire to better ways of working. Similar books in the industry run the risk of local optimisation (getting Agile in IT, building Agile teams etc.) whereas Continuous Digital tackles all the different encompassing parts of an organisation. Readers will find themselves thinking "yeah but what about x..." which Allan telegraphs in the structure, leaving no stone unturned in showing how you can apply these principles across the organisation. Software is an asset, and any serious Agile practitioner should treat this book as an asset in their library.">"Allan Kelly brings together a wealth of modern software and product management tips and techniques to present a coherent case against the traditional project mindset. He asks us to focus on treating software as the core business asset, introducing end dates to software development is as ludicrous as introducing an end date to your business he states.">"Allan Kelly builds on things you may already know about, to explain consequences you don't. Best of all, it's a constructive and positive story that avoids the trap of merely complaining about what doesn't work. Instead, Continuous Digital covers a surprisingly large number of topics, from team composition and prioritisation to governance and budgeting. The result is a large book that impressively delivers insights in each of its 26 chapters. It's a more substantial and rewarding read than Project Myopia, but also a book I wish more of my colleagues had read in the past. Recommended."Amazon Review - Peter Hilton
In the digital world, the business is technology, and technology is the business. Agile software development was the first wave of process change for digital business. Now it is time to update management models and thinking. Continuous Digital sets out a new management model for digital business. A management model that takes Agile to the next level. Allan Kelly describes how software is omnipresent in digital business, how software is an asset and needs treating as such. He describes new management paradigms for the digital and agile age: - How dis-economies of scale not economies of scale rule software development - When planning delays action - How value changes over time - The lifecycle of stable value-seeking teams - Budget alternatives for funding software development Digitisation forces companies to rethink the way they organize themselves. This book offers a template for new businesses and new thinking on managing that work.
"How do I make my user stories smaller?" "What is the right size for a user story?" "What is the difference between an Epic and a Story? And where do Tasks and Sub-tasks fit in?" "Who writes user stories?" "Why user stories?" ""Do I have to use User Stories?"" Allan Kelly found himself answering these questions, and similar ones, again and again so... ""As a ... I want ... So that ... "" - this humble little who-what-why template has become the most widely used means of communicating requirements for Agile teams. In this slim volume Allan Kelly provides practical advice on writing, reading and working with user stories.
