Franz Anton Mesmer (1734-1815) fu un medico assai controverso per le proprie tesi, all'epoca del tutto innovative. I suoi studi sul magnetismo lo resero il più importante precursore dell'ipnosi. Sosteneva che il magnetismo animale potesse essere adoperato per la cura di ogni manifestazione della malattia. In questo intervento del 1897 l'importante fisiologo Angelo Mosso ricorda l'importanza di questo medico, che tentò fondare una nuova filosofia della Natura, che mise in evidenza alcuni fenomeni singolari che può presentare il sistema nervoso, e dimostrò colle sue esperienze quanto sia instabile l'equilibrio della ragione umana e quanto sia cieca la credulità del pubblico. Mosso afferma che se è vero come credono molti che va lentamente accumulandosi nella nostra razza la degenerazione del sistema nervoso, il nome di Mesmer sarà più venerato nei secoli futuri e l'alcoolismo, l'abuso degli eccitanti, il desiderio di sensazioni sempre più forti, lo strapazzo del cervello, la trascuranza della educazione fisica, preparano colla eredità patologica nuove generazioni, nelle quali sarà maggiore il numero di quelli che passano facilmente dalla veglia in uno stato di sonnambulismo improvviso.
