n the final years of his life, Chekhov produced some of the stories that rank among his masterpieces, and some of the most highly-regarded works in Russian literature. The poignant 'The Lady with the Little Dog' and 'About Love' examine the nature of love outside of marriage - its romantic idealism and the fear of disillusionment. And in stories such as 'Peasants', 'The House with the Mezzanine' and 'My Life' Chekhov paints a vivid picture of the conditions of the poor and of their powerlessness in the face of exploitation and hardship. With the works collected here, Chekhov moved away from the realism of his earlier tales - developing a broader range of characters and subject matter, while forging the spare minimalist style that would inspire such modern short-story writers as Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner.

""The Murder"" is a short story written by Anton Chekhov, one of the most prominent Russian writers of the 19th century. The story revolves around the murder of a wealthy merchant named Ivan Grigoryevitch. The murder takes place in the town of S, and the protagonist of the story is a local doctor named Loshadin. The story begins with Loshadin receiving a visit from the police, who are investigating the murder. The police suspect that Loshadin may have been involved in the murder, as he was seen in the vicinity of the crime scene on the night of the murder. However, Loshadin denies any involvement and claims that he was on his way home from a house call when he heard a scream and saw a man running away from the scene of the crime. The rest of the story follows Loshadin's attempts to clear his name and find the real murderer. Chekhov's writing style is characterized by its psychological depth and realism, and ""The Murder"" is no exception. The story explores themes of guilt, innocence, and the nature of justice, and is a gripping and thought-provoking read.We all behaved as though we were frantic. I read, while the old maids and other females sang, and then after standing on their legs for twenty-four hours or longer without eating or drinking, suddenly a trembling would come over them as though they were in a fever; after that, one would begin screaming and then another--it was horrible! I, too, would shiver all over like a Jew in a frying-pan, I don't know myself why, and our legs began to prance about. It's a strange thing, indeed: you don't want to, but you prance about and waggle your arms; and after that, screaming and shrieking, we all danced and ran after one another--ran till we dropped; and in that way, in wild frenzy, I fell into fornication.'This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. TREPLIEFF. Yes, she is furious because Nina is going to have a success on this little stage. [Looking at his watch] My mother is a psychological curiosity. Without doubt brilliant and talented, capable of sobbing over a novel, of reciting all Nekrasoff's poetry by heart, and of nursing the sick like an angel of heaven, you should see what happens if any one begins praising Duse to her! She alone must be praised and written about, raved over, her marvellous acting in "La Dame aux Camelias" extolled to the skies. As she cannot get all that rubbish in the country, she grows peevish and cross, and thinks we are all against her, and to blame for it all. She is superstitious, too. She dreads burning three candles, and fears the thirteenth day of the month. Then she is stingy. I know for a fact that she has seventy thousand roubles in a bank at Odessa, but she is ready to burst into tears if you ask her to lend you a penny. SORIN. You have taken it into your head that your mother dislikes your play, and the thought of it has excited you, and all. Keep calm; your mother adores you. TREPLIEFF. [Pulling a flower to pieces] She loves me, loves me not; loves-loves me not; loves-loves me not! [Laughing] You see, she doesn't love me, and why should she? She likes life and love and gay clothes, and I am already twenty-five years old; a sufficient reminder to her that she is no longer young. When I am away she is only thirty-two, in my presence she is forty-three, and she hates me for it. She knows, too, that I despise the modern stage. She adores it, and imagines that she is working on it for the benefit of humanity and her sacred art, but to me the theatre is merely the vehicle of convention and prejudice. When the curtain rises on that little three-walled room, when those mighty geniuses, those high-priests of art, show us people in the act of eating, drinking, loving, walking, and wearing their coats, and attempt to extract a moral from their insipid talk; when playwrights give us under a thousand different guises the same, same, same old stuff, then I must needs run from it, as Maupassant ran from the Eiffel Tower that was about to crush him by its vulgarity. - Taken from "The Seagull" written by Anton Chekhov

""The Kiss"" is a short story written by Anton Chekhov, one of the most celebrated Russian writers of the 19th century. The story revolves around a young man named Ryabov, who is infatuated with a married woman named Olga. Despite her being married, Ryabov cannot resist his attraction towards her and tries to initiate a romantic relationship with her. However, Olga is hesitant and tries to avoid Ryabov's advances. One day, when Olga and Ryabov are alone in a carriage, Ryabov tries to kiss her. Olga resists at first, but eventually gives in to Ryabov's persistence. However, the kiss turns out to be a disaster, leaving both Olga and Ryabov feeling awkward and embarrassed. The story explores the themes of infatuation, temptation, and social norms. Chekhov's writing style is known for its realism and attention to detail, and ""The Kiss"" is no exception. The story is a poignant reminder of the consequences of giving in to our desires and the importance of respecting boundaries. Overall, ""The Kiss"" is a thought-provoking read that leaves a lasting impression on the reader.THIS 26 PAGE ARTICLE WAS EXTRACTED FROM THE BOOK: The Stories of Anton Chekhov, by Anton Chekhov. 'Uncle Vanya' is a play by the Russian playwright Anton Chekhov. It was first published in 1897 and received its Moscow première in 1899 in a production by the Moscow Art Theatre, under the direction of Konstantin Stanislavski. The play portrays the visit of an elderly professor and his glamorous, much younger second wife, Yeléna, to the rural estate that supports their urban lifestyle. Two friends, Vanya, brother of the Professor's late first wife, who has long managed the estate, and Astrov, the local Doctor, both fall under Yelena's spell, while bemoaning the ennui of their provincial existence. Sonya, the Professor's daughter by his first wife, who has worked with Vanya to keep the estate going, meanwhile suffers from the awareness of her own lack of beauty and from her unrequited feelings for Dr. Astrov. Matters are brought to a crisis when the Professor announces his intention to sell the estate, Vanya and Sonya's home and raison d'ètre, with a view to investing the proceeds to achieve a higher income for himself and his wife.

'The Cherry Orchard' is the last play by Russian playwright Anton Chekhov. It opened at the Moscow Art Theatre on 17 January 1904 in a production directed by Constantin Stanislavski. Although Chekhov intended it as a comedy, and it does contain some elements of farce, Stanislavski insisted on directing the play as a tragedy. Since this initial production, directors have had to contend with the dual nature of the play. The play concerns an aristocratic Russian woman and her family as they return to their family estate (which includes a large and well-known cherry orchard) just before it is auctioned to pay the mortgage. While presented with options to save the estate, the family essentially does nothing and the play ends with the sale of the estate to the son of a former serf; the family leaves to the sound of the cherry orchard being cut down. The story presents themes of cultural futility - both the futile attempts of the aristocracy to maintain its status and of the bourgeoisie to find meaning in its newfound materialism. In reflecting the socio-economic forces at work in Russia at the turn of the 20th century, including the rise of the middle class after the abolition of serfdom in the mid-19th century and the sinking of the aristocracy, the play reflects forces at work around the globe in that period.

A classic four-act romantic tragedy by Chekhov, Uncle Vanya premiered to excellent reviews in 1899. Aleksandr Vladimirovich Serebryakov is a former university professor, now retired in a rural estate. His daughter Sonya and her husband - the titular Vanya - manage his affairs. However all is not well in the Serebryakov household, with drama swift to follow the professor's announcement to sell his country estate. The result of this sudden revelation is scheming, romantic and otherwise, between the play's nine principle characters. The tensions crescendo as we see what Vanya and others may resort to as the security to which they were accustomed is imperilled, and difficulties thought consigned to the past shockingly resurfaces. Essentially a extensive rewrite of his play The Wood Demon, authored over a decade earlier, Uncle Vanya reflects the stylistic improvements which Chekhov learned in the intervening period. The cast of characters is trimmed - the original's twenty become just nine - which allows the plot to flow easier and for the audience to better follow the scenes. Having been staged many times, and adapted for both TV and the silver screen around the world, Uncle Vanya is today considered a classic of Russian literature for its characterisation and intensity.

The Black Monk is a novel written by Anton Chekhov, one of the most renowned Russian writers of the 19th century. The novel tells the story of a young student named Andrei Vasil'ich Kovrin, who is struggling with his mental health. Kovrin is a brilliant and ambitious scholar, but he is haunted by a mysterious and terrifying black monk who appears to him in his dreams. As the novel progresses, Kovrin becomes increasingly obsessed with the black monk and begins to believe that he is a divine messenger sent to guide him on a path to greatness. However, his obsession with the black monk leads him down a dangerous and destructive path, and he ultimately spirals into madness. The Black Monk is a powerful exploration of the human psyche and the dangers of unchecked ambition and obsession. Chekhov's prose is masterful, and his vivid descriptions of Kovrin's descent into madness are both terrifying and deeply moving. This novel is a must-read for anyone interested in the works of Anton Chekhov or in the study of human psychology.""In ancient times a happy man grew at last frightened of his happiness -- it was so great! -- and to propitiate the gods he brought as a sacrifice his favourite ring. Do you know, I, too, like Polykrates, begin to be uneasy of my happiness. It seems strange to me that from morning to night I feel nothing but joy; it fills my whole being and smothers all other feelings. I don't know what sadness, grief, or boredom is. Here I am not asleep; I suffer from sleeplessness, but I am not dull. I say it in earnest; I begin to feel perplexed.""This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
