Unico degli scolari di mastro Jacopo rimase nella nota bottega il mite e timido ingegno di Parri della Quercia. Vedete stranezza di casi! Un dipintore di tavole a tempera, che non si era mai arrischiato a lavorare in muro, ereditava il luogo e la tradizione d'un artista come Jacopo di Casentino, che aveva sempre dipinto a fresco, senza lasciar pennelleggiata una tavola. Infatti, la memoria di mastro Jacopo doveva essere ricordata da questo epitaffio in versi latini, della cui prosodia non posso starvi mallevadore: Fingere me docuit Gaddus; componere plura Apte pingendo corpora doctus eram. Prompta manus fuit; et pictum est in pariete tantum A me; servat opus nulla tabella meum. Tuccio di Credi, anima caritatevole, si fece compagno volenteroso ed assiduo al povero Spinello, e questi si lascio condurre da lui a Firenze. Messer Luca aveva consigliato egli stesso il viaggio, sperando che ne potesse ritrarre qualche giovamento lo spirito conturbato di suo figlio, e immaginate come dovesse esser grato a Tuccio di Credi, che si profferiva custode e guidatore del suo disgraziato figliuolo. Spinello non aveva piu ombra di volonta. Lasciava che Tuccio di Credi provvedesse lui ad ogni cosa. Era come il naufrago che ha tutto perduto, fortune e speranze, e che, dalla riva deserta su cui l'hanno sbalestrato i marosi, guarda con occhi smarriti, senza sdegno e senza paura, il torbido elemento che ha portato i suoi danni.
