Siamo in una stazione termale svizzera a metà Ottocento. Tom è un ragazzo giamaicano che è diventato erede universale di un facoltoso lord inglese. Lo statunitense Giorgio Anderssen, altro ospito della stazione termale, sfida Tom ad una partita di scacchi. È l'inizio di un match tesissimo che vede contrapporsi due giocatori dalla tecnica molto diversa.Considerato uno tra i migliori racconti della letteratura italiana ottocentesca, 'L'alfier nero' affronta anche, seppur in modo abbastanza indiretto, la tematica del razzismo.Arrigo Boito (1842-1918) è stato un poeta, librettista e compositore italiano. Il suo duplice talento di poeta-musicista lo mise in luce sin da subito nel panorama intellettuale dell'epoca dove si distinse per i suoi libretti d’opera, tra i massimi capolavori del genere. Il punto più alto della sua produzione è comunemente considerato il dramma musicale 'Mefistofele' che condensa l'intero 'Faust' di Goethe.

Apparso a puntate sul «Corriere di Milano» nel 1870, questo racconto appare in questa edizione per la prima volta in volume. Una moneta - il fiorino che manca per raggiungere il milione - appare in sogno all'usuraio. In un'atmosfera tra miracolo e raccapriccio la maledizione che ne seguirà si carica di sottili valori simbolici. La Catastrofe dell'avidità - tema caro alla narrativa ottocentesca - è l'idea dominante di questa novella di Arrigo Boito, nella quale emerge trasparente il suo stile nobilmente melodrammatico. Una favola breve, dallo stile asciutto e ricco di pathos, di allegorie sempre attualissime. Una degna riscoperta della nostra letteratura. Sono racconti come questi che non bisognerebbe dimenticare.Esponente di punta della scapigliatura milanese. Arrigo Boito è stato un letterato, librettista e compositore italiano.
