Encore une année de plus: encore une année de moins. Et quand on a répété ce calcul vingt, trente, quarante, quatre-vingts fois, on s'arrête tout à coup, et l'on reste muet pour l'éternité. Le plus souvent même on n'attend pas que l'année soit finie; il y a bien peu de gens qui meurent le 31 décembre, de même qu'il y en a bien peu qui naissent le 1er janvier. C'est sans doute par un esprit de haute impartialité et pour couper court à bien des réclamations, qu'on a choisi spécialement deux jours, l'un pour être la fin, et l'autre pour être le commencement. Ces deux jours se suivent sans aucune interruption, sans le moindre intervalle. À la minute, à l'instant qui achève l'un, l'autre commence. Sur la route du temps, on n'en peut jamais revenir; il faut marcher, marcher sans cesse; courbé, flétri, déchiré aux ronces du chemin, hors d'haleine, n'ayant plus même ce souffle de l'âme qui est l'espérance, sans ressort, souvent sans lumière, on marche toujours, éternel supplice, condamnation implacable !

Avez-vous jamais fait cette réflexion que, dans les pays montagneux, les hommes sont bien plus conservateurs, plus soumis aux traditions, plus difficiles à transformer que partout ailleurs ? Les idées pénètrent difficilement dans les montagnes, et, quand elles y arrivent, elles s'y arrêtent, s'enracinent, logent dans le creux des rochers, et se perpétuent jusqu'aux dernières générations sans subir le moindre mélange ni la moindre atteinte de l'extérieur. Le vent des révolutions souffle au-dessus d'elles sans presque les effleurer, et lorsque le voyageur moderne s'arrête dans ces endroits qui échappent aux transformations sociales, il cherche, dans son étonnement, des causes politiques et morales, quand la simple explication s'offre à lui dans la situation géographique.

Encore des Chroniques ! Oui, encore. Je voudrais, dès la première page, déconseiller mes lecteurs de les lire. Et cependant elles sont ma seule ressource, à moi qui n'émarge à aucun budget, à moi, rouge avancé, tellement avancé que mes amis m'ont perdu de vue à leur avènement au pouvoir, il y a de cela bientôt quatre ans. Quatre ans ! ça n'est rien dans la vie des gouvernements, soit; mais comme cela compte dans la vie des particuliers ! J'ai vu ma fortune décroître à mesure que grossissait le vote libéral, et quand la majorité des libéraux devint écrasante, je touchais juste à la famine. Si mon parti restait au pouvoir encore deux ans, les ultramontains se verraient obligés de me faire enterrer à leurs frais, et... je serais vengé.

Pour moi, il me semble que je fais à peu près la même chose, et, pourtant, je rencontre tous les jours, et de plus en plus, signe infaillible de décrépitude, des gens qui me disent à l'envi: Comme vous rajeunissez! Comme vous êtes alerte! Vous avez l'air d'un jeune homme de vingt-cinq ans! ... Hélas! Quand un homme rajeunit tant que ça, on n'a pas besoin de le lui dire; il s'en aperçoit suffisamment à la nature et au nombre des exploits qu'il peut accomplir. Non, jamais, jamais il ne reviendra le temps où nous partions, tous les deux ou trois jours, à la fermeture des bureaux, Alphonse Geoffrion, Alphonse Lusignan, Joseph Turgeon et moi, pour faire le tour à pied de la petite montagne de Montréal! Chemin faisant, nous arrêtions, bien entendu, chez Prendergast, au détour de la Côte des Neiges, pour prendre une cerise et même deux cerises . Il nous arrivait encore parfois d'y souper, puis nous revenions à la ville, forts comme des Turcs et dispos comme des chamois.
