Wanneer mensen uit verschillende werelden elkaar ontmoeten, kunnen er mooie vriendschappen ontstaan. Willem Bake is een Nederlandse ingenieur wonend op Java. Hij is positief ingesteld en heeft een materialistisch wereldbeeld. Op een avond hoort hij een bijzonder fluitspel. De muzikant blijkt een kreupele Javaanse jongen genaamd Si-Benkok te zijn. Hij speelt zo wonderbaarlijk mooi dat Bake hem vraagt vaker voor hem te spelen. En langzaam ontstaat een bijzondere vriendschap. Si-Benkok laat Bake de mystiek van de Oosterse wereld zien waardoor de Nederlander Java opeens in een heel ander daglicht ziet.
