A mediados del siglo XIX salió a la luz una valiosa recopilación de las composiciones poéticas escritas hasta entonces por Bartolomé Mitre, y publicadas bajo el epígrafe genérico de Rimas (1854). Este interesante volumen (cuyo éxito entre críticos y lectores propició una reedición corregida y aumentada en 1876) apareció dividido en varias secciones como: Armonías de la pampa, El caballo del gaucho, El pato, El ombú, En medio de la pampa, A Santos Vega, etc.), todas ellas compuestas por poemas fundidos en uno de los moldes estróficos que tuvieron mayor alcance en la lírica hispanoamericana del siglo XIX: la décima octosilábica. El presente libro, Armonías de la Pampa, es un canto al hombre de la pampa, sus tradiciones, su valentía y sus juegos, y comprende cinco poemas titulados:I. A un ombú en medio de la PampaII. A Santos Vega. Payador argentino III. El pato, cuadro de costumbresIV. El caballo del gauchoV. La Revolución del SurEn la producción gauchesca de Bartolomé Mitre, la pampa y sus tópicos como referentes ambientales se humanizan desde un enfoque nítidamente romántico que, más que atribuir cualidades vitales al resto de las cosas, acaba por envolverlas en un halo idílico dotado de tanta belleza como irrealidad. Junto a ello, la impagable recuperación de tipos, usos y paisajes pintorescos como los que retrata el autor argentino en sus versos dan lugar a unas composiciones enriquecidas por el encanto de los ecos populares y las tradiciones legendarias, aunque, eso sí, testimoniales de la rigurosa labor de reconstrucción realizada por un autor culto.
