Bela Bartok composed the series of forty-four violin duos in 1931, prompted by the German violin teacher Erich Doflein. With the exception of numbers 35 and 36, all the pieces are based on original folk melodies, and the majority were collected by the composer himself during his numerous field trips in the Carpathian Basin. The melody for no. 42 was collected by Bartok in Algeria. Bela Bartok composed Dance Suite in 1923 for the 50th anniversary of the foundation of Hungary's capital through the unification of Buda, Obuda, and Pest. It soon became one of his most popular orchestral works, and in 1925 he arranged it for piano solo. Adam Tabajdi completed the organ version of Dance Suite in 2019/20, and recorded it on the Kern organ of Sapporo's Kitara Concert Hall later that year. His transcription was inspired by the composer's own version for piano, exploiting the alternative solutions offered by the ''orchestral'' timbres of the organ, with its manuals and pedals. The ideal instrument for the present version is an expansive, eclectic style organ with at least three manuals.This flamboyant arrangement requires great virtuosity, stamina, and creativity from the performer. Adam Tabajdi (b. 1993) is an outstanding young Hungarian organist. Alongside the music of J. S. Bach, his repertoire includes Liszt, and Franck, as well as twentieth-century works, with a special focus on Messiaen, Ligeti, and Florentz. He is a committed performer of contemporary music, but he also feels a close connection with the works of old masters such as Sweelinck, Weckmann, and Couperin. In 2021 he won first prize in the Toulouse International Organ Competition, and in 2022 he was awarded the Junior Prima Award.

Mit dem "Konzert für Orchester" eröffnet Henle die Reihe preiswerter Studien-Editionen nach dem Notentext der Bartók-Gesamtausgabe. Als Bartók im Mai 1943 von Serge Koussevitzky den Kompositionsauftrag erhielt, bedeutete dies nicht nur eine finanzielle Unterstützung, sondern auch einen wichtigen schöpferischen Impuls für den schwer kranken Komponisten. Schon im Oktober lag das fünfsätzige Konzert vor, das Koussevitzky begeistert als "das beste Orchesterwerk der letzten 25 Jahre" bezeichnete. Auch die ersten Aufführungen im Winter 1944/45 waren sehr erfolgreich. Gleichwohl wurde Bartók zur Fixierung eines alternativen Endes bewogen, das der schon im September 1945 verstorbene Komponist allerdings nicht mehr hören sollte. Bartók-Spezialistin Klára Móricz liefert in ihrer Ausgabe beide Versionen und fasst in einem spannenden Vorwort Geschichte und Überlieferung des "Konzert für Orchester" zusammen. Ein knapper Bemerkungsteil informiert über die wesentlichen Grundlagen der Edition.

Bartóks Mikrokosmos gehört zu den Meilensteinen der pädagogischen Klavierliteratur - und geht doch weit über ein "klassisches" Unterrichtswerk hinaus. Neben spieltechnischen Aspekten behandeln diese 153 in aufsteigendem Schwierigkeitsgrad angeordneten Klavierstücke nämlich die Grundlagen kompositorischer Arbeit: Von "Ostinato" über "Freie Variationen" oder "Imitation und Umkehrung" in der Satztechnik bis zu programmatischen Ideen "Aus dem Tagebuch einer Fliege" oder den berühmten "Sechs Tänzen im bulgarischen Rhythmus", die den furiosen Abschluss dieses Jahrhundertwerks bilden. Die Henle-Urtextausgabe basiert auf dem in Vorbereitung befindlichen Band der Bartók-Gesamtausgabe, bereitet diesen aber durch gezielte Kommentierungen und Hinweise zu Bartóks Aufführungen speziell für die musikalische Praxis auf. Zudem werden die sechs Bände der 1940 erschienenen Erstausgabe zu drei praktischen Doppel-Bänden zusammengefasst, wodurch Anfängern wie Fortgeschrittenen jeweils ein optimaler Einstieg ermöglicht wird.

Die viersätzige Suite op. 14 entstand 1916 und zählte zeit seines Lebens zu Bartóks bevorzugten Klavierwerken. In ihr verwendete er - im Unterschied zu seinen übrigen Klavierkompositionen jener Jahre - keine Volksliedmelodien oder folkloristische Elemente. Vielmehr strebte er hier einen neuen "abstrakteren" und transparenten Klavierstil an, der auf Ornamentik und Spielfiguren verzichtet. Eine Besonderheit der Henle-Ausgabe ist der zusätzliche Andante-Satz im Anhang, der ursprünglich vor dem Scherzo stehen sollte und von Bartók erst kurz vor der Drucklegung 1918 entfernt wurde. Diese Urtextausgabe dieses bedeutenden Werks des Konzertrepertoires übernimmt den Notentext der Bartók-Gesamtausgabe. Als Herausgeber firmiert der wohl renommierteste Bartók-Forscher weltweit, László Somfai, von dem auch die ausführliche Werkeinführung und hilfreiche Hinweise zur Interpretation stammen.

Bartóks 1910/11 entstandenes Allegro barbaro gehört zu seinen bekanntesten und beliebtesten Klavierwerken. Auch der Komponist selbst trug es gerne bei öffentlichen Auftritten vor und spielte es mehrfach ein. Die von ihm als "authentische Aufnahme" bezeichnete Einspielung von 1929 weist in Artikulation, Tempo und sogar der Anzahl der Ostinatotakte hochinteressante Varianten gegenüber dem Druck auf. Diese werden in unserer Urtext-Ausgabe erstmals in den Notentext übernommen und kommentiert. So vermittelt uns László Somfai mit dieser ersten Bartók-Urtextausgabe bereits einen Eindruck von den vielfältigen musikalischen Impulsen der Kritischen Gesamtausgabe Béla Bartók, die ab 2016 als Koproduktion von Editio Musica Budapest und G. Henle Verlag erscheinen wird.

Die 1915 entstandenen Rumänischen Volkstänze gehören zu Bartóks bekanntesten Werken - und dies in vielfältiger Gestalt, denn neben verschiedenen Ausgaben der Klavierfassung und einer späteren Orchestrierung von Bartók selbst gibt es auch Arrangements von Zeitgenossen, die mit Einverständnis des Komponisten entstanden. Man kann heute sogar auf Einspielungen der Tänze durch Bartók selbst zurückgreifen; diese dokumentieren mit variierenden, durch Oktavverdopplungen angereicherten Wiederholungen quasi die "Konzertfassung" der Tänze. Bartók-Forscher László Somfai bringt Ordnung in diese reiche Überlieferung und präsentiert in der Henle-Urtextausgabe die für den Musiker wesentlichen Varianten direkt im Notentext.

After Bart6k had made offset prints of the music examples of the 2 first two volumes of Rumanian F olk Music in 1940, the printed but incomplete draft of Vol.

Bart6k left behind the bulk of this material when he emigrated to the United States in October, 1940 (The complete poetic text appears together with the music in each transcription).2 The second draft, uncorrected, comprises 304 pages printed by photo 3 offset process from master sheets.
