The Incarnation and Common Life is a book written by Brooke Foss Westcott, a renowned theologian and Bishop of Durham. The book explores the concept of the Incarnation, which is the belief that Jesus Christ was God made flesh, and its significance in everyday life. Westcott argues that the Incarnation is not just a theological doctrine, but a practical reality that should shape the way Christians live and interact with the world around them. The book is divided into two parts. The first part examines the Incarnation from a theological perspective, exploring its biblical basis and its implications for Christian doctrine. Westcott also discusses the relationship between the Incarnation and other important theological concepts, such as redemption and sanctification. The second part of the book focuses on the practical implications of the Incarnation for everyday life. Westcott argues that the Incarnation should shape the way Christians approach their work, their relationships, and their social and political engagement. He also discusses the importance of the Church as a community of believers who embody the Incarnation in their common life.Overall, The Incarnation and Common Life is a thought-provoking and insightful exploration of the significance of the Incarnation for Christian theology and practice. 1909. Westcott endeavors to suggest in the notes lines of thought which he found to open light upon problems which we are required to face. In doing this, it was his desire to induce his readers to become his fellow students, and he aimed at encouraging sustained reflection rather than at entering upon the field of controversy. No conclusion is of real value to us till we have made it our own by serious work; and controversy tends no less to narrow our vision than to give to forms of language or conception that rigidity of outline which is fatal to the presentation of life.
