The City of Granada is also known for its many parks and gardens. The symbol of Granada is the pomegranate - a nutritious fruit cultivated since ancient times throughout the Mediterranean region. Pedro Antonio de Alarcón served in a Spanish military operation in Morocco and in this poem he longs to return to Granada. This book is a poem about this beautiful Mediterranean land of jasmine, mountains, rivers, peaceful forests, spring nights, gardens, flowers for a pillow, a [garden] nest of perfumes, and palm trees. "How immense your countryside, how splendid and happy!" The author often uses metaphors of a beautiful woman in describing his love for Granada such as: a "divine mermaid", "what sweet hugs these rivers."
