The Flowers of Evil (1857) is a collection of poems by Charles Baudelaire. Les cinquante pièces qui composent ce recueil ont été rédigées entre 1855 (Le Crépuscule du soir) et 1864. Une quarantaine d'entre elles ont paru dans divers journaux de l'époque (selon la volonté de Baudelaire, une partie des poèmes ont été publiés dans la revue littéraire L'Artiste, dirigée par son ami Arsène Houssaye auquel il dédie son oeuvre, et une autre dans des journaux à grands tirages comme La Presse ou Le Figaro. Selon une lettre de 1862 qui sert de dédicace aux éditions postérieures, Baudelaire a été inspiré en les écrivant par l'exemple d'Aloysius Bertrand. Les dix poèmes restant ont été publiés à titre posthume entre 1867 et 1869.

D'abord refusée par la Revue de Paris, cette nouvelle paraît en janvier 1847 dans le Bulletin de la Société des Gens de Lettres, par les bons soins de Charles Asselineau. Madame de Cosmelly, en promenade dans le jardin du Luxembourg, croise un ami d'enfance, Samuel Cramer. Elle se confie de ses déboires matrimoniaux: M. de Cosmelly la délaisse, pour une autre femme, une danseuse qu'on appelle La Fanfarlo. Samuel Cramer s'engage à mettre un terme à cette idylle. Mais rapidement lui-même s'éprend de cette troublante Fanfarlo... Il ne s'agit pas d'une grande oeuvre romanesque, Baudelaire n'est pas à l'aise dans le récit. Ainsi il empreinte le schéma au roman La Grande Coquette, de son ami Alexandre Privat d'Anglemont. Les traits de La Fanfarlo sont sans doute inspirés des charmes de Lola de Montès qui défraya la chronique parisienne de 1845 à 1846. Dans le personnage de Samuel Cramer, on y reconnaît une sorte d'autoportrait ironique de Baudelaire. Certains critiques y reconnaissent aussi beaucoup de traits physiques et moraux que l'on aurait pu prêter à Privat d'Anglemont.
