This book explores Della Cruscan poetry in the late eighteenth-century literary scene. A sociable, ornate, and deeply theatrical type of poetry, Della Cruscanism was associated with writers like Robert Merry, Mary Robinson, and Hannah Cowley. While Merry is the poet most commonly associated with the Della Cruscan school, this book argues that Della Cruscanism was a movement dominated by female poets and that this was one of the key reasons for the later disavowal and downgrading of its poetic accomplishments. It offers a close examination of these women writers and their role in shaping the poetic culture of the fashionable newspaper. In doing so, this study offers the first account of the feminization of the fashionable newspaper and of popular literary culture in the final years of the eighteenth century.
This book is a "must read" for Leaders. It is as much about keen leadership as it is about the organizational elephants that take up residence in organizations, work groups and work teams-whether it be in the boardroom, the back-room or the factory floor. The very existence of elephants means trouble. Some organizations and work-teams are trampled by their own elephants. Is your organization or work group being the best that it can be? Do you sense how much more effective your organization or workteam could be if the people in it could just have better harmony, civility or cohesiveness? To all be moving forward together? Sometimes the elephants in the room can reach the point that people dread going to work-yet no one knows how to call the Big Elephant Game. It can get ugly. It doesn't have to be that way. The deeper threads of authentic leadership that are woven throughout this book provide powerful insights for leaders! Arguing that the end of the eighteenth-century witnessed the emergence of an important female poetic tradition, the author analyzes the poetry of several key women writing between 1780 and 1860. She also gives an account of the central role of women writers to an emergent late eighteenth-century mass literary culture.
