Practical Font Design has built a niche for itself among graphic and Web designers who want to build their own fonts: especially with the first book. I learned a lot since I wrote that first book. This radically revised, updated, and expanded third edition combines the first two books. They are rearranged so they make a lot more sense and some brand new material is added. This is a quick introduction showing a workflow to build new fonts using FontLab 5. Fourteen fonts are developed in this book including an 8-font text family and a companion 4-font sans serif for headers. The techniques are simple and easy to understand. The results are completely under your control.
The righteous perishes, and no man takes it to heart: and devout, merciful people are taken away, no one understanding that the righteous are taken away from the evil to come [Isaiah 57:1]Here begins a tale of wonder as the plans of the Lord are revealed to a church which had not considered the wisdom and complexity of God's love for us.We are asked to open our hearts and minds to accept the very real possibility that Jesus meant what He said by telling us that no one knows the day nor the hour. All we need to do is remember how the religious of the day missed it when Jesus came to the manger. In fact, as you know, few figured it out until after He had risen back to be with the Father. It may look outrageous, but it's possible! We must be open to the very real possibility that we really do not know how it's going to happen. We only know that the King is coming soon!
When it comes to book production, InDesign is your best tool for graphic production. Even Photoshop are commonly put in a special graphic container produced in InDesign, exported as a PDF, and then placed into the book.InDesign is the best graphics tool for book productionThis book, which is an updated excerpt from David's two best sellers "Writing In InDesign" and "Practical, Professional Self-Publishing Handbook", show book designers how to use InDesign effectively and efficiently for the graphic production needed for their book designs. It covers formats needed and ebook requirements, the use of object styles, basic drawing techniques, and so on. The book is in full-color, because most books sold are now ebooks in full color.David has been self-publishing books since the mid-1990s and was a very early adopter of Lulu, then Createspace, then Kindle KDP, Scribd, Nook, Kobo, and Smashwords. Few writers have the breadth of experience is the new paradigm of self-published indie authors. This book will help you.
End the confusion! God's people have been sold a bill of goods. If you think about it at all, evolution could not be true. If this young earth is really billions of years old, then God is a liar. You know that isn't true. This book tells the tale of God's creation lovingly, by a man who only recently came to his senses. It had been obvious when he visited the Grand Canyon that this hadn't happened over countless millennia. It had happened quickly with a massive flood of water. God made man. We didn't come from apes. The first two chapters of Genesis make excellent scientific sense when you understand how God did it and why He did it in the order it was done. It's amazing how clear it is when a believer explains how it works. Join David on a glorious trip through the 7,000 years of creation. Yes, there is only one millennium left for this one. Then this training place is dissolved in fire and replaced with what we commonly call heaven. God calls it a new creation. Rejoice in the glory of what He has done for us!
Why do you want to use Fontographer? For the fun of it!When I received the opportunity to go back to my roots, and see what the new Fontographer was like, I was a little concerned. I had just spent nine years painfully teaching myself to letterspace by hand, to write OpenType features, and to become accustomed to the tool set of FontLab. Don't get me wrong, FontLab is a great program and I am grateful for what I have learned. There are still a few features of FontLab that, as a professional font designer, I cannot do without. But I was taken by surprise.Fontographer brought the fun back!It is still the same marvelous program with which I first learned to design fonts. The drawing interface is still clean, clear, and elegant. I still works the way I have learned to work over the past two decades of digital graphic design. I found pure joy in drawing again. Fontographer is a wonderful drawing experience. It has been a real joy to experience that fun again. After nearly a decade in FontLab, font design is fun again. To quote from the book: "Fontographer is an application which appeals to experienced graphics designers with a background in PostScript illustration... The majority of designers working in the mid-1990s had a copy of Fontographer...and everyone probably used it [at least a little].Fontographer had [and still has] a unique and intuitive set of drawing tools that enable amateurs of that era to enter the world of font design. I'm talking amateurs in the sense that John Baskerville considered himself an amateur-as I also consider myself, though I am certainly not in Baskerville's league. For me, font design is a beloved sideline with which I indulge myself. It's become a treasured tool I use in my current trade-book writing, designing, and production."Welcome!...to an experiment in font designNot a horribly auspicious way to start out a book is it? It is the way I start out my FontLab book, but things have changed since then. I had lost my experimental, creative edge-entering into font production as a career. Now after writing this book, I find that I really do not like font design as a career (writing and book design do that for me), but I still love it as a creative expression.Nevertheless, it is still an experiment. All of my font designs are experiments. Honestly, as a font designer, my only credentials are experience and practice tied to a growing body of customers who have purchased my experiments. Since going full-time with Hackberry Font Foundry and the Radiqx Press publishing house in 2009 I have learned a lot.Mainly I have learned that my personal vision is simply that-personal. I am not claiming superiority to anyone. In fact, I am an amateur in the old British sense of the word. I'm really into it. I've gotten quite experienced. But I have no interest in what the industry says must be done. Most of the modern fashionable font designs seem far too overdone and nearly pretentious to my eye. Showing off is for kids. My focus is simply on getting good fonts I can use and which meet my needs. They are designed as simply and easily as possible. I am merely sharing what I have learned as an alternative to design school training. For me, self-taught is not a hostile epithet but a way of life
This book is what I would use for my textbook teaching my six-credit Digital Publishing community college course for the Business Graphics degree I designed, taught, and led for 18 years. This is a major update for me.Many of the changes I've been waiting for with ePUB production have been implemented. InDesign now stands at the top of the heap for book production in general and ePUB production in particular. You do not need to know code, though understanding how HTML and CSS works will aid your conceptual understanding. The new fixed layout ePUBs will show gradient paragraph rules, gradient strokes and fills in tables, and much more--but justification does not work in FXL. The exported ePUBs upload flawlessly to the iBooks Store and Kobo Writing Life. The ePUB2 with embedded fonts uploads to Draft2Digital and Smashwords. Tables and lists are not there yet, but you can shade the background of a paragraph (in a style). These are very good ePUBs.Finally, the 21st century book publishing software we need is within our grasp. There's still more to come, but the present version is very good.
A starting place for learning scripture As you would suspect, there are a couple of things you need to understand before you start reading. And, there is a recommended order once you start reading. This little book was written to give you that. Not much theory, just practical things to do to enable you to understand what you are reading. More than that, you need to understand how what you are reading fits into the entire 66-book Bible. So, there are short lists describing where the various books fit: history, the Holy Spirit, prophecy, walking as a Christian, and the rest. The basic idea is to answer your questions as you start reading the only book in which God himself was involved in the writing. All these various books were written with the guidance of the Holy Spirit. So, it's God explaining Himself. Cool. David Bergsland has been writing since he turned 50. Now, he's finally worked up to where he can do what he wanted to do from the first: Clear, simple instructional booklets on Bible study. Finally, he's old enough to simply write what he knows he should be writing. Of course, that's a little nerve-wracking. But what's new? That's been the story of his whole life.He prays you'll find it edifying.
How can I make it better the next time? This is the plaintive question I get every time after I have set up, formatted, and uploaded a book for a new author. It is also one of the most common questions I see while socially networking. There are three basic underlying concepts1. Producing a print version of your book2. Dealing with the size of your production budget3. Producing a manuscript which can be easily formattedLet's take the first concept: Many new self-publishing authors believe that they do not need a print version. Most eventually want a printed copy to give to friends, an excellent reviewer, or in giveaway promotions.Let's get it out in the open: Preparing a print version of your book in Word or any other word processor is virtually impossible! There are some good resources. But, you do not want the help of a Word user, untrained in graphic design, formatting your book. They may get it working, but the professionalism needed to earn reader trust will not be there. The best way [if you must use Word] is to buy a Word template from a book designer you trust. How much do you want to spend on ebook production? This is important to consider. Many writers will tell you about the thousands of dollars needed to publish a book. Guy Kawasaki in APE talks about four to five thousand dollars, and he is doing all the production himself. Many of us do not have nearly those resources. Without money, it will take time. Publishing a book is an immensely complex project. The skillsets needed are large, and require practice and experience. My contention is that, with study and practice, you can publish your books for free. Your only costs will be a small monthly fee for your software plus online access. In addition, you will need to learn a lot about an industry which is relatively unknown to the general public: publishing. Some of the skill sets needed1. Writing2. Editing & proofing3. Typography4. Cover design5. Print requirements: high quality, high resolution6. Proper formatting for uploading7. Book marketing: content, genre, & niche8. Online social networkingOne of them is an area you can learn by yourself-easily. That is typography. I'm getting ready to release a small book to help you learn the basics of typography, plus covering some of what can be done with Word. You will quickly discover that many of the core typographic issues cannot be accomplished in Word or any other word processor.Professional book design requires InDesignInDesign [and QuarkXPress] are really the only software applications which are developed for professional designers. These applications are designed to do skill sets two through six in the list above. Because they are designed to produce this work, they do it better, faster, and much more efficiently. For book design, nothing is better than InDesign. It handles skill sets one through seven [because it includes a built-in word processor].The key skill, virtually unknown outside of graphic design, is how to present the words so they can be read effortlessly and easily understood. There is a basic level of competency which must be reached. For professional book production, you need to understand the core of professional book design: typography. That is the purpose of this book. It will teach you the basics you need to be able to use in a professional Word template, to give your manuscript to a trained book designer, or to produce it yourself. I've written other, far more detailed books which cover the entire process. My goal is to save you money and timeYou can pay an copyeditor to clean up the writing for you, but that can easily cost $300 to a couple thousand dollars. It still will not help solve the typographic requirements which enable you to give your readers an enjoyable reading experience. At present, I publish several books a year. My only expenses are what I pay for online access. You can learn how to do that also.
In the new millennium, an incredible opportunity has appeared to the Body of Christ: the new self-publishing paradigm. It is my belief that the Lord intends to use this gift as a tool to disciple the church and to plant seeds for the final harvest. Only time will tell about this.Regardless, the role of Christian author in the midst of all that is going on in the world needs careful examination. If the Lord has called you to write, what does that mean? You have been called by the Lord of Lords to do this work He has given you to do. That's real serious. This is God talking to you. What does He expect from you? How are you to respond? What skills will you need? How will you get your books to sell? The questions keep appearing before our eyes one after the other as we struggle to make sense of it all.So, who am I to try and help? One compelled to write about these issues and to encourage Christian authors to walk the strait and narrow path. I've been teaching scripture since 1974, which is almost as long as I have been working for publishers and designing books. I was a teaching pastor for over a decade. But, none of that matters. What matters is how you react to the message.
This is a design book, not a set of software tutorials. It is assumed you know how to use InDesign CC. Graphic designers are often appalled by what they see in ebooks. PDFs are no real problem, as they work with them all the time. But ePUBs and MOBI versions seem like a weird type of book with the limits of Web design, plus no real possibility of typographic control. It is true that ebooks have been a mess until the past couple of years. In some ways, they still are. However, InDesign CC has truly solved most of the problems. It always did export the best PDFs. Now it exports very good ePUB FXLs (fixed layout), reflowable ePUBs, and Kindle books (though it still takes a bit of work to fit Amazon's requirements).Wonderful that all our problems are solved, right? Well, you know better than that. Each format requires a redesign to make it work well. But that is never going to change. This book shows you how to make the redesigns efficiently. You never will be able to automatically repurpose a document for print, PDF, ePUB FXL, ePUB Reflowable, and Kindle book with excellence. Automation can only produce average quality. But you can quickly redesign your styles. This book will show you how these books are put together. It will explain the format limitations. Then it will talk about what is possible and give you the freedom to add excellent typography within those parameters. The book covers the creation of: - Downloadable PDFs: These are also the basis of Kindle's Textbook, or Print Replica, version- Fixed layout ePUB FXLs: How they differ from PDFs, plus who accepts them & who does not - Reflowable ePUBs: with embedded fonts or not, what does not work, and what you can do- Kindle KF8: and Amazon's new KFX format with Enhanced TypographyThis book will tell you, who already know how to produce an excellent book design for print, how to convert that design to a downloadable color PDF, an ePUB FXL version, a reflowable version with embedded fonts, another without fonts, and a dumbed down Kindle version for those things Kindle can't handle yet.The design portion is up to you. This book is written to provide solutions to those irritating ebook production problems, so you can design more freely.
Tired of bad graphics in your books?> Blurry with no small detail covers?> Fuzzy maps? > Horrible photos? This book will show you the two different types of images: vector and raster [Illustrator/InDesign or Photoshop/GIMP/whatever]. You will learn what is required for print and for ebooks. You will see the different file formats required by each. And, finally, you will be shown what is required [or preferred] by the various self-pub suppliers. The author has nearly 50 years experience both doing and teaching these materials. He began teaching digital publishing in 1991 using Word, PageMaker, QuarkXPress, and Photoshop [plus FreeHand & Illustrator]. He taught these things at a college level in the Business department at a large community college for nearly 20 years. You'll learn what you need! Many self-publishing authors are confused by the use of graphics in their books: print and ebook. many of you are using Word or Scrivener. Some are using more professional graphic solutions. This book explains the two basic types of images: vector and raster graphics [Illustrator/InDesign or Photoshop/Elements/GIMP/et al]. It briefly explains how to save the best quality images. And finally it covers what the various self-pub providers require [or strongly prefer] for graphics. It will answer your questions, or at least get you far enough along to ask me for details.Who am I? I've been doing this stuff since 1967, and I've run a publishing house full-time since 2009. I've got 25 years in digital publishing-teaching it at the college level for nearly 20 of those years. I started with word and PageMaker, plus QuarkXPress in 1991. I wrote the first textbook for InDesign, starting in 1999.
This book is direct and to the point. In it we share a word the church does not want to hear in this modern age of political correctness. But we really need to consider the implications."You can enter God's Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose that way. But the gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it." [Matthew 7:13-14 NLT] We must start with the narrowness. Many people are made nervous by this. It is obvious that most pastors and priests are. How can you build a church by telling the people things like this? It is not good to talk about exclusiveness. This is certainly part of the narrowness of the gate. In modern America this is where we get into trouble very quickly from the PC media police.Jesus could not have made it more clear. This aspect of the narrowness is made clear by many things he said. If you are into the words of Jesus typeset in red ink-these are in red. He lays it out boldly-in a way that cannot be ignored.Yes, I am the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved." [John 10:9 NLT]However, it is obvious to us all that today many local church pastors have trouble saying that Jesus is the gate, the door to the life abundant. It is commonly not preached because the whole approach sounds a bit narrow-minded.But it is much stronger than that. As you will see in this book, many powerful, active church members will find themselves outside with no way to enter heaven. You need to read this book.
Ebooks have been a mess until now. Actually, they still are in many ways. However, InDesign CC 2014 has truly solved most of the problems. It always did export the best PDFs. Now it exports very good ePUB FXL (fixed layout), reflowable ePUBs, and because Kindle will upload the reflowables converting easily, the Kindle problem is solved also.Wonderful that all our problems are solved, right? Well, you know better than that. Each format requires a redesign to make it work well. But that is never going to change. This book shows you how to make the redesigns efficiently. You never will be able to repurpose a document for print, PDF, ePUB FXL, ePUB Reflowable, and Kindle book. But you can quickly redesign your styles. This book is the ePUB design parts of Writing In InDesign CC 2014 Producing Books. It has received a gentle rewrite and edit. But it will tell those of you, who already know how to produce an excellent book design for print, how to convert that design to a downloadable color PDF, an ePUB FXL version, a reflowable version with embedded fonts, another without fonts, and a dumbed down Kindle version for those things Kindle can't handle yet.

Though it is true that only the Holy Spirit can bring a person to repentance and salvation, it is also true that the scriptures are inspired by God and useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. This is the final edition of Practical Font Design using Fontlab Studio 5. It shares and demonstrates the latest, most efficient, basic font production workflow for single fonts and font families. David has spent over twenty years refining his font design techiques. This book does not offer a lot of intellectual design help. This is focused on - "How the heck do I do this?" and - "How can I quit spinning my wheels?" and - "Why is this taking me so much time?"These techniques will enable you to enjoy font design by letting you focus on the actual drawing of characters with a clear plan and a workflow which does not get in your way.More than that, these techniques will enable you to control the consistency so your font works as a whole. The book will teach you what a companion font is and how to design one. It will teach you an easy letterspacing technique which will allow you to simply control whether you are designing a text font or a display font. The book is a wealth of tips and techniques shared over the author's shoulder as you watch him develop his fonts. He's not teaching his method, but showing you how to develop your method of working. The book develops fourteen fonts in four font families, focused on book design. These Librum/Bream families are available at MyFonts.com, fonts.com, linotype.com, fontspring.com, and through his website: bergsland.orgThe book will change your life as a font designer.
