Drones (scientific name unmanned aerial vehicles) are aircraft that do not need a human pilot on board. Their flight is monitored remotely from the ground or via computers embedded on the vehicle. Previously restricted to military operations, these vehicles are increasingly finding applications in the civilian world¿firefighting, policing, commerce, research and monitoring etc. According to the secretary, registration will stress the need for drone operators and hobbyists to observe safe flight practices and apply airspace rules (LINK 2). This announcement is a clear indication of just how profound drones are influencing and will continue to impact our lives. In this article, I present ten ways through which drones are shaping our future.

David has had bowel cancer and he and his wife lost their daughter Allison to this dreadful disease at the too young an age of twenty-eight. The foreword to An Unstoppable Runner has been written by the world-famous runner, Australia's very own Pat Farmer AM. Pat's enthusiasm for us all getting fit and healthy is well known. Apart from running as often and as far as possible, David has lived with his wife Dale on remote Flinders Island in Bass Strait for the past twenty years. When he is not running, David is deputy mayor of the local council and has served the community as a councillor for over fifteen years.

In Rich Mans War historian David Williams focuses on the Civil War experience of people in the Chattahoochee River Valley of Georgia and Alabama to illustrate how the exploitation of enslaved blacks and poor whites by a planter oligarchy generated overwhelming class conflict across the South, eventually leading to Confederate defeat.This conflict was so clearly highlighted by the perception that the Civil War was a rich mans war and a poor mans fight that growing numbers of oppressed whites and blacks openly rebelled against Confederate authority, undermining the fight for independence. After the war, however, the upper classes encouraged enmity between freedpeople and poor whites to prevent a class revolution. The book focuses on the operations and the aircraft of the Nachtjagd from its origins in the inter-war years, to its formation as an embryonic and innovative force in 1939 and through its desperate and climactic battles against the massed raids of RAF Bomber Command from 1939 onwards. The force evolved from using single-seat Bf 109s to twin-engined Bf 110s and Ju 88s, fitted with technically advanced radar equipment and weapons systems, supported by a sophisticated ground reporting network.It produced many leading night fighter aces such as Wolfgang Falck, Heinz-Wolfgang Schnaufer, Helmut Lent and Hans-Joachim Jabs. As the war progressed and the strategic situation began to tilt away from Germany's favour so, ironically, the pace of development quickened with the Luftwaffe introducing uprated versions of the Ju 88 as well as new types such as the Do 217 and He 219. In the last, desperate months of the war, even the Me 262 was introduced as a night fighter in limited numbers.
