On a trop souvent fait d'Edmond Rostand l'homme d'une seule pièce, Cyrano. Certes, il y a bien eu l'Aiglon et Chantecler, mais ce ne sont là que des demi-succès, dixit la critique, que l'histoire littéraire ne saurait retenir puisque de cette époque elle ne voudrait se souvenir que des Maudits. De cette méprise vont naître deux lacunes: en isolant Cyrano de l'ensemble de l'¿uvre, cette pièce s'est vue amputer de ses principales dimensions, tandis que le lecteur est privé, depuis cent ans déjà, des autres univers du poète. C'est cette injustice qu'il s'agit ici de réparer avec la publication de La Samaritaine.

Cyrano de Bergerac, au nez disgracieux, aime secretement sa cousine Roxane, qui lui demande d'aider Christian de Neuvillette, un bel homme a la seduction de qui Roxane n'est pas restee insensible. Cyrano, par amour pour Roxane, fait tout pour Christian, et c'est meme lui qui lui dicte les mots pour plaire a Roxane. Une histoire d'amour bouleversante. Cette piece de theatre se lit comme un roman, tant elle est dense, pleine de sentiments divers, d'histoires et d'emotions, sans oublier quelques sommets de poesie.-

Chantecler is a verse play in four acts written by Edmond Rostand. The play is notable in that all the characters are farmyard animals including the main protagonist, a chanticleer, or rooster. The play centers on the theme of idealism and spiritual sincerity, as contrasted with cynicism and artificiality. Much of the play satirizes modernist artistic doctrines from Rostand''s romanticist perspective. Rostand was inspired to write the play after exploring the farming countryside around his new home, Villa Arnaga, in the Basque Country of the French Pyrenees, where he had come to live for health reasons after the phenomenal success of Cyrano de Bergerac and L''Aiglon. Although he began writing the play in 1902, its completion was repeatedly delayed due to Rostand''s perfectionism and illnesses.

Regarded as one of the greatest dramas ever written, this story of the silver-tongued soldier whose unfortunate looks drive him to woo his love by speaking for his handsome but dull-witted rival is beloved around the world. Revised reissue.

Virkelighedens Hercule Savinien Cyrano de Bergerac var en forfatter, soldat og fantast, der levede i Frankrig 1619-1655. I Edmond Rostands skuespil er han ridderen uden frygt og dadel, ridderen med den store næse og det hæslige ydre, men en ukuelig stolt og skøn sjæl. Han er også manden, der af en kærlighed til den skønne Roxane, som han ikke tør erklære, fordi han selv mener, at han er for grim til at hun kan elske ham, slutter venskab med baron Christian de Neuvillette, som har det, han mangler – nemlig skønheden – og mangler det, som Cyrano har - nemlig poesi og ånd. Han låner baronen sin ånd og sin sjæl, påtager sig lidelsen og lader vennen om lykken, blot for at gøre Roxane lykkelig. Selv da Christian dør, røber han ikke hemmeligheden, men lader hende leve i mindet om den døde uden at lade hende ane, at alt det hun elskede hos ham, i virkeligheden var Cyrano.
