Non riprendeva, anzi lodava ed amava che gli scrittori ragionassero molto di sè medesimi; perchè diceva che in questo sono quasi sempre e quasi tutti eloquenti, ed hanno per l'ordinario lo stile buono e convenevole, eziandio contro il consueto o del tempo, o della nazione, o proprio loro. E ciò non essere meraviglia; poichè quelli che scrivono delle cose proprie hanno l'animo fortemente preso e occupato della materia; non mancano mai nè di pensieri, nè di affetti nati da essa materia e nell'animo loro stesso, non trasportati d'altri luoghi, nè bevuti da altre fonti, nè comuni e triti, e con facilità si astengono dagli ornamenti frivoli in sè, o che non fanno a proposito, dalle grazie e dalle bellezze false, dall'affettazione e da tutto quello che è fuori del naturale. Ed essere falsissimo che i lettori ordinariamente si curino poco di quello che gli scrittori dicono di sè medesimi: prima, perchè tutto quello che veramente è pensato e sentito dallo scrittore stesso, e detto con modo naturale e acconcio, genera attenzione, e fa effetto; poi, perchè in nessun modo si rappresentano o discorrono con maggior verità ed efficacia le cose altrui, che favellando delle proprie: atteso che tutti gli uomini si rassomigliano tra loro, sì nelle qualità naturali, e sì negli accidenti, e in quel che dipende dalla sorte; e che le cose umane, a considerarle in sè stesso, si veggono molto meglio e con maggior sentimento che negli altri.

La Vita Militare dall'incipit del libro Tempo fa, parlando d'uno di questi bozzetti, due lettori molto facili a commoversi hanno significato, senza volerlo, il doppio scopo che mi sono proposto nello scrivere l'intero libro. Un popolano disse: -Finito di leggere, avrei stretto la mano al primo soldato in cui mi fossi imbattuto per via. Un soldato disse: -È un racconto che consola e mette un po' di buona volontà. Che si voglia bene al soldato, e ch'egli faccia il soldato con cuore: se io riuscissi a ottenere questi due effetti in qualcuno dei miei lettori, stimerei largamente compensate le mie fatiche, e sarebbe pago il mio desiderio più vivo e più caro.

Il Vino dall'incipit del libro Studiato il vino nella vite, considerato nella leggenda, nella poesia e nei costumi, visto come si compone e come si traffica, in che maniera opera sull'organismo, e per che via conduce al delitto, alla pazzia e alla morte, non resta che a trattare dei suoi effetti psicologici: dire, cioè, come agisca sull'intelligenza, sull'immaginazione e sul sentimento, fin che si rimanga, bevendo, molto di qua da quel limite funesto, varcato il quale il bevitore cade nelle mani del professore Lombroso.

Non è difficile trovarla perché vi si vede davanti a tutte le ore del giorno una schiera di ragazzine del popolo che, ammirando le vetrine, si scordano dell'involto, del cavolo o delle pagnotte che debbono portare a casa, per abbandonarsi a un'orgia di desideri. E tutte le signorine piccole che passan di là, condotte per mano dalla mamma o dalla governante, per una ventina di passi tirano l'accompagnatrice, sporgendo il viso innanzi, e per un'altra ventina di passi si fanno tirare, torcendo il capo indietro.

I Lettori di Manoscritti dall'incipit del libro Chi non ricorda quel personaggio de La Bohème del Mürger, che tira ora l'uno ora l'altro amico, a tradimento, in casa propria, dove gli legge manoscritti interminabili, al lume della candela anche di giorno, perché tien chiuse tutte le imposte, dopo che una delle sue vittime tentò di scappare dalla finestra?

Chi guarda per la prima volta una grande carta dell'Olanda, si meraviglia che un paese così fatto possa esistere. A primo aspetto, non si saprebbe dire se ci sia più terra o più acqua, se l'Olanda appartenga più al continente che al mare. Al vedere quelle coste rotte e compresse, quei golfi profondi, quei grandi fiumi che, perduto l'aspetto di fiumi, par che portino al mare nuovi mari; e quel mare che, quasi cangiandosi in fiume, penetra nelle terre e le rompe in arcipelaghi; i laghi, le vaste paludi, i canali che s'incrociano in ogni parte, pare che un paese così screpolato debba da un momento all'altro disgregarsi e sparire. Si direbbe che non possa essere abitato che da castori e da foche, e si pensa che gli abitanti, poichè c'è gente tanto ardita da starvi, non ci debbano dormire coll'anima in pace. Pensai queste cose la prima volta che guardai una grande carta dell'Olanda, e mi venne il desiderio di sapere qualche cosa intorno alla formazione di questo singolare paese; e siccome quello che ne seppi mi determinò a fare il libro, lo scrivo qui, colla speranza che possa determinare altri a leggerlo.

Il primo giorno di scuola 17, lunedì Oggi primo giorno di scuola. Passarono come un sogno quei tre mesi di vacanza in campagna! Mia madre mi condusse questa mattina alla Sezione Baretti a farmi inscrivere per la terza elementare: io pensavo alla campagna e andavo di mala voglia. Tutte le strade brulicavano di ragazzi; le due botteghe di libraio erano affollate di padri e di madri che compravano zaini, cartelle e quaderni, e davanti alla scuola s'accalcava tanta gente che il bidello e la guardia civica duravan fatica a tenere sgombra la porta. Signore, signori, donne del popolo, operai, ufficiali, nonne, serve, tutti coi ragazzi per una mano e i libretti di promozione nell'altra, empivan la stanza d'entrata e le scale, facendo un ronzio che pareva d'entrare in un teatro. Lo rividi con piacere quel grande camerone a terreno, con le porte delle sette classi, dove passai per tre anni quasi tutti i giorni. C'era folla, le maestre andavano e venivano. R. il duca di Savoia; il solo pinerolese al quale io possa confidare una lettera pericolosa con la speranza che i vostri riveriti padroni non gli ficchino le mani nelle tasche. Grazie delle affettuose domande intorno alla famiglia. I fratelli, le sorelle, tutti son sani come pesche. Io pure, grazie a quest'aria purissima che vien dai monti, e nonostante le molte noie della mia professione, se non schiatto dalla salute, almeno posso dire che i medici non hanno mai visto il colore del mio letto.
