His poetry and essays have appeared in numerous journals and anthologies since 1976. Collections of his poetry include Poems About Silence, Amagansett Cycle, and Child in the House. His biography Sylvia Path: Method and Madness, was the first of that poet, and Conrad Aiken: Poet of White Horse Vale won the Melville Kane Award from the Poetry Society of America.

The first of a planned two-volume biography that follows Aiken's early life from his birth in 1889 to 1925 when he stood on the threshold of both nervous breakdown and poetic success. Butscher follows the poet's life and work as he sought to regain, in some permanent form, the idyll he had lost as a child.
