Mary is left alone for much of the day in her isolated house, high among the farming hills. A constant stream of visitors calls to relieve her loneliness, but there is something odd about their visits. In Val and Carlene, Nanny recognizes traces of her own past that trouble her conscience. Val and Carlene enact a dramatic flashback to forty years before, in which Nanny dismisses her nursery maid Rosie for 'immoral' behaviour.|4 women
