Les jésuites étaient parmi les directeurs, non-seulement les plus accrédités et les plus habiles, mais aussi les moins scrupuleux, par la raison qu'ils avaient été institués tout exprès au XVIe siècle, à la suite de la réforme, pour rendre à l'église la domination qui lui échappait. Que l'église régnât par eux et en eux, c'était là leur fin suprême. Aussi est-ce en eux surtout que la casuistique fut attaquée. Plusieurs de leurs livres avaient déjà amené des protestations et même des censures, quand Arnauld, en 1643, douze ans avant les Provinciales, prit à partie la société tout entière, en publiant sa Théologie morale des jésuites, extraite fidèlement de leurs livres. Pascal ne fit que reprendre ce thème, mais c'est ce qui devint la partie la plus considérable de sa polémique et la plus puissante. Quand on parle des Provinciales, on pense surtout à ces douze lettres (5 à 16), dont l'ensemble compose une accusation si forte et si redoutable. C'est par là surtout que le livre a vécu et qu'il vivra autant tout au moins que les jésuites eux-mêmes auront l'air de vivre. Je me sers de cette expression parce que je crois, avec Sainte-Beuve, que du jour où Pascal les a touchés, il les a tués. Reste la question de savoir si c'est seulement par hasard que la théologie janséniste et la morale janséniste sont associées, ou si elles tiennent l'une à l'autre essentiellement, et s'il en est de même de la morale relâchée et du molinisme..."
