Of all the sovereigns that have worn the crown of England, Queen Elizabeth is the most puzzling, the most fascinating, the most blindly praised, and the most unjustly blamed. To make lists of her faults and virtues is easy. One may say with little fear of contradiction that her intellect was magnificent and her vanity almost incredibly childish; that she was at one time the most outspoken of women, at another the most untruthful; that on one occasion she would manifest a dignity that was truly sovereign, while on another the rudeness of her manners was unworthy of even the age in which she lived. Sometimes she was the strongest of the strong, sometimes the weakest of the weak.

THE palace in which Alfred the Great was born was hardly what we should call a palace in these days. It was a long, low, wooden house, or rather a group of houses; for whenever more room was needed, a new building was put up, and joined to the old ones wherever it seemed most convenient, so that the palace looked much like a company of one-story houses that had drifted together in a flood. There had to be room for a large family, for the king's counsellors and many of the church dignitaries lived with him. All around the house were many smaller houses for the fighting and the working men. Those were the days when at any moment a messenger might come flying on a panting horse and say: - "O King Ethelwulf, the Danes are upon us! Their ships are in the offing, and they are driving toward Thanet." Then the king would send horsemen in hot haste to all his underchiefs, and he himself, at the head of the soldiers of his household, would march toward the coast, sometimes to fight and sometimes, if fighting failed, to buy them off by a ransom of money and jewels and vessels of gold and of silver.

"Heroes of the Middle Ages" offers a great way to introduce elementary to junior high aged children to that time period. Even those who find history boring will enjoy sharing this little find with young historians. Much of the history learned in school is fragmented, offering little in the way of making connections and showing relationships between people groups and nations. The whole purpose of this short historical introduction is to do just that--weave a tapestry of connections between the rise and fall of nations during the Middle Ages. You will find the connection between the fall of Rome and the invading barbarians. You'll be given a brief introduction to the forming of Germanic nations, the Teutonic invasions, the Crusades, the discoverers, as well as a look into the struggles of the nations during this time. Don't pick this up expecting a deep biographical sketch of Charlemagne or Joan of Arc. Know that you'll be getting a basic account of their importance in history. Hopefully, this text will whet your appetite and challenge you to study further.

Story of the life of Alfred the Great, how at twenty-two he inherited a land overrun by savage pirates, -a restless ignorant, defenseless land, and how he fought the Danes and restored the country to a condition of peace and safety. When he inherited his kingdom at twenty-two, the king was not safe in his palace, the priest in his church. There was little opportunity for agriculture; laws were not executed; schools had disappeared, the very wish to learn had disappeared; the whole land was rapidly sinking into ignorance and barbarism, and was exhausted by its sickening dread of the horrors that the next moment might brin

I remember being once upon a time ten miles from a store and one mile from a neighbor; the fire had gone out in the night, and the last match failed to blaze. We had no flint and steel. We were neither Indians nor Boy Scouts, and we did not know how to make a fire by twirling a stick. There was nothing to do but to trudge off through the snow to the neighbor a mile away and beg some matches. Then was the time when we appreciated the little match and thought with profound respect of the men who invented and perfected it.
