    La traviata è un'opera in tre atti di Giuseppe Verdi su libretto di Francesco Maria Piave, tratto dalla pièce teatrale di Alexandre Dumas (figlio) La signora delle camelie; fa parte della "trilogia popolare" assieme a Il trovatore e a Rigoletto. Fu in parte composta nella villa degli editori Ricordi a Cadenabbia, sul lago di Como. La prima rappresentazione avvenne al Teatro La Fenice di Venezia il 6 marzo 1853 ma, a causa soprattutto di interpreti non all'altezza e della scabrosità dell'argomento, si rivelò un sonoro fiasco; ripresa l'anno successivo con interpreti più validi, riscosse finalmente il meritato successo. A causa della critica alla società borghese, l'opera, nei teatri di Firenze, Bologna, Parma, Napoli e Roma, fu rimaneggiata dalla censura e messa in scena con alcuni pezzi totalmente stravolti. Sempre per sfuggire alla censura, l'opera dovette essere spostata come ambientazione cronologica dal XIX secolo al XVIII secolo (Aonia edizioni).
