La Escuela Moderna fue fundada en 1901 en Barcelona por Francisco Ferrer, con el objetivo de educar a la clase trabajadora de una manera racionalista, secular y no coercitiva, buscando fomentar el librepensamiento y el aprendizaje colaborativo, sin castigos ni exámenes, e incluyendo también cursos para la educación de adultos. Se trataba de un centro de enseñanza mixta y favorable a las reivindicaciones obreristas que pronto se granjeó las antipatías de los sectores conservadores y del clero, que por entonces monopolizaba la educación en España. A pesar de ello, las ideas de Ferrer se extendieron rápidamente a través de las asociaciones obreras y republicanas, sirviendo también de inspiración al Movimiento de Escuelas Modernas, muy activo en Estados Unidos, Gran Bretaña y América Latina. La Escuela Moderna de Barcelona cerró en 1906. Tres años más tarde Ferrer fue condenado a muerte y ejecutado por su supuesta participación en la Semana Trágica de Barcelona.
