Estas razones nos hicieron vacilar algún tanto, y nos pareció en efecto deber al gusto delicado de los críticos de nuestro siglo la atención de exponerles sencillamente los motivos que nos obligan a seguir el contrario rumbo. Ello es cierto, que toda la Compañía ha mirado siempre a aquellos fervorosos misioneros como miembros de esta provincia: que aun la del Perú, de cuyo seno salieron, digámoslo así, para regar con su sangre estas regiones, jamás nos ha disputado esta gloria: que la Florida y la Habana, en que tuvieron sus primeras residencias, se incorporaron después por orden del mismo Borja a la provincia de México, y se habrían incorporado desde el principio, si hubiera habido en la América Septentrional alguna otra provincia en aquel tiempo. Parece, pues, que por el común consentimiento, prescripción, superior disposición, y aun por la situación misma de los lugares, estamos en derecho de creer que nos pertenecen aquellos gloriosos principios, y de seguir la opinión del padre Francisco de Florencia. Este docto y religioso padre, es el único que nos ha precedido en este trabajo, emprendiendo la historia general de la provincia. Él dio a luz solo el primer tomo partido en ocho libros, que comprenden por todo, los diez primeros años desde la primera misión a la Florida, hasta la fundación del colegio máximo por don Alonso de Villaseca, a que añadió algunas vidas de algunos varones distinguidos. Destinados a escribir la historia de esta provincia, no hubiéramos pensado en volver a tratar los mismos asuntos, si los superiores, en atención a la cortedad de aquel primer ensayo y a la distancia de los tiempos, no hubieran juzgado deberse comenzar de nuevo. Fuera de esto, se conservan en los archivos de provincia otros dos tomos manuscritos, su autor el padre Andrés Pérez de Rivas, el mismo que escribió la historia de Sinaloa, que por más feliz, o por más corta, tuvo la fortuna de ver la luz. Esta obra comprende poco más de 80 años, desde la venida del padre Pedro Sánchez, y fuera de las fundaciones de los más colegios, contiene un gran número de vidas de varones ilustres. Hállase también otro volumen en folio que comprende cuasi el mismo tiempo con las fundaciones de varios colegios, escrito, aunque con poco orden histórico; pero con bastante piedad, sinceridad y juicio.
