Fénelon, claimed in brotherhood by Christians of every denomination, was born in Perigord, on the 6th of August, 1651. To the world he is Fénelon; he was François de Salignac de la Mothe Fénelon to the France of his own time. He wrote many works, of which this is one, and they have been collected into twenty volumes. The translation here given was anonymous, and was first published in the year 1713.

Francois Fénelon (1651-1715) fue un famoso escritor y teólogo francés, nacido en el castillo de Fenelon, en el seno de una familia noble de la Dordogna. Fue autor de una serie de lecciones morales acerca de los deberes de los gobernantes. En 1695 fue nombrado arzobispo de Cambrai y poco tiempo después se vio envuelto en disputas teológicas y morales. Fue condenado al exilio en su propia diócesis por el rey Luis XIV, ofendido también por su obra titulada Las aventuras de Telémaco (1699), novela en la que defiende la idea de la fraternidad entre las naciones.

François de Salignac de la Mothe, más comúnmente conocido como François Fénelon (1651 - 1715) fue un teólogo católico, poeta y escritor francés. Fénelon es más recordado por su novela Aventuras de Telémaco, una escabrosa crítica a las políticas de Luis XIV, probablemente publicado en 1699. La influencia literaria de esta novela política fue considerable durante los dos siglos siguientes. De familia noble, Fénelon fue elegido Arzobispo de Cambrai, en 1695, fue preceptor del duque de Borgoña (el nieto del rey Luis XIV). La publicación de una de sus obras, la Explicación de las máximas de los santos, fue condenada por la Santa Sede y Fénelon fue despojado de sus títulos y rentas, y confinado en su diócesis.
