Das Thema des Dialogs ist die Suche nach der bestmöglichen Staatsverfassung und deren Ausgestaltung im Detail. Zunächst werden Zielsetzung und Prinzipien einer umsichtigen Gesetzgebung besprochen und historische Beispiele herangezogen, dann wendet sich das Gespräch konkreten Einzelheiten der Beschaffenheit eines optimal eingerichteten Staates zu. Es wird erörtert, unter welchen Voraussetzungen ein solcher Staat entstehen könnte und wie das Zusammenleben seiner Bürger zu regeln wäre. Angestrebt wird diejenige Verfassung, die den Bürgern dauerhaft die günstigsten Lebensverhältnisse gewährleistet. Die aret¿ (Tüchtigkeit, Tugend) der Bürger ist das Staatsziel, dem alles untergeordnet wird. Das fiktive, literarisch gestaltete Gespräch über Staatstheorie ist Platons umfangreichste Schrift. An der Diskussion sind drei alte Männer beteiligt: der Kreter Kleinias, der Spartaner Megillos und ein Athener, dessen Name nicht genannt wird. Platon (428/427 v. Chr.-348/347 v. Chr.) war ein antiker griechischer Philosoph. Er war Schüler des Sokrates, dessen Denken und Methode er in vielen seiner Werke schilderte. Die Vielseitigkeit seiner Begabungen und die Originalität seiner wegweisenden Leistungen als Denker und Schriftsteller machten Platon zu einer der bekanntesten und einflussreichsten Persönlichkeiten der Geistesgeschichte.
