It was in the month of October, 18-, that the Pacific, a large ship, was running before a heavy gale of wind in the middle of the vast Atlantic Ocean. She had but little sail, for the wind was so strong, that the canvas would have been split into pieces by the furious blasts before which she was driven through the waves, which were very high, and following her almost as fast as she darted through their boiling waters; sometimes heaving up her stern and sinking her bows down so deep into the hollow of the sea, that it appeared as if she would have dived down underneath the waves; but she was a fine vessel, and the captain was a good seaman, who did what he considered best for the safety of his vessel, and then put his trust in that Providence who is ever watchful over us. The captain stood before the wheel, watching the men who were steering the ship; for when you are running before a heavy gale, it requires great attention to the helm: and as he looked around him and up at the heavens, he sang in a low voice the words of a sea song: -One wide water all around us, All above us one black sky.-

About the middle of the seventeenth century, in the outskirts of the small but fortified town of Terneuse, situated on the right bank of the Scheldt, and nearly opposite to the island of Walcheren, there was to be seen, in advance of a few other even more humble tenements, a small but neat cottage, built according to the prevailing taste of the time. The outside front had, some years back, been painted of a deep orange, the windows and shutters of a vivid green. To about three feet above the surface of the earth, it was faced alternately with blue and white tiles. A small garden, of about two rods of our measure of land, surrounded the edifice; and this little plot was flanked by a low hedge of privet, and encircled by a moat full of water, too wide to be leaped with ease. Over that part of the moat which was in front of the cottage door, was a small and narrow bridge, with ornamented iron hand-rails, for the security of the passenger. But the colours, originally so bright, with which the cottage had been decorated, had now faded; symptoms of rapid decay were evident in the window-sills, the door-jambs, and other wooden parts of the tenement, and many of the white and blue tiles had fallen down, and had not been replaced. That much care had once been bestowed upon this little tenement, was as evident as that latterly it had been equally neglected.

The Three Cutters is a novel written by Captain Frederick Marryat. The story is set in the early 19th century and follows the adventures of three smugglers who operate along the coast of England. The three cutters are a group of men who make their living by smuggling goods into England from France. They are led by a man named Snarleyow, who is a brutal and violent leader. The other two cutters are named Jemmy Ducks and Tom Cringle. Jemmy is a good-natured man who is loyal to Snarleyow, while Tom is a young man who is new to the group and is eager to prove himself. The story revolves around the cutters' attempts to evade the authorities and continue their smuggling operations. Along the way, they encounter various obstacles, including rival smugglers, treacherous weather conditions, and the British navy. They also have to deal with internal conflicts within their group, as Snarleyow's violent tendencies become increasingly difficult to tolerate. As the story progresses, the cutters become involved in a plot to rescue a young woman who has been kidnapped by a gang of smugglers. This leads to a series of dangerous and thrilling adventures, as the cutters battle their way through the English Channel and confront their enemies head-on. Overall, The Three Cutters is a gripping tale of adventure, danger, and intrigue. Marryat's vivid descriptions of life at sea and his detailed portrayal of the cutters' operations make for an engaging and exciting read. The book is a classic of English literature and remains popular with readers today.""Oh, ma'am, they dare anything! --they just now were for throwing the steward overboard; and they have rummaged for all the portmanteaus, and dressed themselves in the gentlemen's best clothes. The captain of them told the steward that he was Lord B., and that if he dared to call him anything else, he would cut his throat from ear to ear; and if the cook don't give them a good dinner, they swear that they'll chop his right hand off, and make him eat it without pepper or salt!""This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Mr. Midshipman Easy is an 1836 novel by Frederick Marryat, a retired captain in the Royal Navy. The novel is set during the Napoleonic Wars, in which Marryat himself served with distinction.Easy is the son of foolish parents, who spoiled him. His father, in particular, regards himself as a philosopher, with a firm belief in the "rights of man, equality, and all that; how every person was born to inherit his share of the earth, a right at present only admitted to a certain length that is, about six feet, for we all inherit our graves, and are allowed to take possession without dispute. But no one would listen to Mr Easy's philosophy. The women would not acknowledge the rights of men, whom they declared always to be in the wrong; and, as the gentlemen who visited Mr Easy were all men of property, they could not perceive the advantages of sharing with those who had none. However, they allowed him to discuss the question, while they discussed his port wine. The wine was good, if the arguments were not, and we must take things as we find them in this world."
