Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock (1724 1803) ist einer der bedeutendsten Dichter der deutschen Literaturgeschichte. Er gilt als Wegbereiter der Empfindsamkeit, des Sturm und Drang und der Erlebnisdichtung. Als genialer Sprachschopfer schuf er mit seinem Epos "e;Der Messias"e;, seinen Oden, Dramen und poetologischen Schriften ein Werk von bleibender Bedeutung. Durch seine Beziehungen zu einem weit gespannten Dichter-und Aufklarer-Kreis war er ein Fokus der intellektuellen Welt seiner Zeit. Die Hamburger Klopstock-Ausgabe ist die erste wissenschaftliche Ausgabe der Werke und Briefe Klopstocks. Sie macht das Gesamt der handschriftlich und gedruckt uberlieferten Texte zuganglich und in historischen Zusammenhangen uberschaubar. Groe Bestandteile des Materials sind bislang unbekannt oder unveroffentlicht und von der Forschung unberucksichtigt geblieben. Aufgrund der Vollstandigkeit und der Editionsmethode bietet die Hamburger Ausgabe eine sichere Grundlage fur die Erforschung Klopstocks und seiner Zeit. Die Ausgabe gliedert sich in drei Abteilungen, "e;Werke"e;, "e;Briefe"e; und "e;Addenda"e;. Die Abteilung "e;Werke"e; umfasst die Edition bzw. Auswertung der Uberlieferung zu allen Texten, die Klopstock in literarischer und wissenschaftlicher Absicht geschrieben und bearbeitet hat. Damit werden nicht allein bisher unpublizierte Werke der "e;Gelehrtenrepublik"e; und der "e;Grammatischen Gesprache"e; sowie Ubersetzungen Klopstocks aus antiken Autoren zuganglich gemacht, vielmehr wird auch die Variationsbreite der Texte selbst vor Augen gefuhrt, die kennzeichnend ist fur Klopstocks unentwegtes Bemuhen um die vollkommene inhaltliche und sprachliche Ausformung eines Werkes.
