Nietzsche found in classical Athenian tragedy an art form that transcended the pessimism and nihilism of a fundamentally meaningless world. The Greek spectators, by looking into the abyss of human suffering and affirming it, passionately and joyously affirmed the meaning of their own existence. They knew themselves to be infinitely more than petty individuals, finding self-affirmation not in another life, not in a world to come, but in the terror and ecstasy alike celebrated in the performance of tragedies.

He wrote critical texts on religion, morality, contemporary culture, philosophy and science, displaying a fondness for metaphor, irony and aphorism. Nietzsche's key ideas include the death of God, the Übermensch, the eternal recurrence, the Apollonian and Dionysian dichotomy, perspectivism and the will to power. Central to his philosophy is the idea of "life-affirmation", which involves questioning of all doctrines that drain life's expansive energies, however socially prevalent and radical those views might be.[43] His influence remains substantial within philosophy, notably inexistentialism, post-modernism and post-structuralism, as well as outside it. Federico Guillermo Nietzsche nació el 15 de octubre de 1844, en Röcken, Sajonia prusiana. Fue hijo de Karl Ludwig, pastor protestante, y de Franziska Oehler. En julio de 1846 nace su hermana Isabel y en 1848 su hermano José. Al año siguiente muere su padre y posteriormen¬te el pequeño José. El resto de la familia se traslada a Naumburg.
