For a young gay black man like Devon Washington, Manhattan in the 1980s presents exciting possibilities but also grave threats. Since coming to the city from a rough neighborhood in Pittsburgh, Devon has failed at one gay relationship and lost a second lover to AIDS. Settling into the dynamic West Village art scene, he's trying to figure out how to live and love in the midst of a gay pandemic. Racism and street violence pose further complications. After failing at yet a third relationship, Devon is drawn to the mysterious Charles Bedford. In some ways, though, the elusive Charles represents the very life he had hoped to escape by coming to New York.

The 1970s and early 1980s were an incredible time for LGBT life--especially for gay males. A time of exuberant dance clubs, flourishing gay neighborhoods bursting with energy, and sexual liaisons seemingly available everywhere in America's major cities. It was also a time of crisis for gay men, however--in particular, the angry cultural wars that arose on the right, along with the rising scourge of AIDS. Coming out in these years was fraught with complications. Finding and keeping a life partner was especially challenging because of the very sexual freedom that defined "gay liberation." In a culture where there was little glue to hold gay relationships together, Alex, Jimmy, and Devon faced their own individual challenges and demons in finding commitment and happiness-which in some cases proved to be all too brief.
