We walk by faith, not by sight. We do not know what is ahead. If we knew the black Fridays that may he out there ahead, our hearts would sink within us. We would be unfitted for the mighty demands upon us right now, if we knew of the separations, of the desolating breakups in our homes and in one lives out there ahead. We must wait until we get there and His grace will be ample, surely. He hides from us our successes. If we knew that out yonder were great chapters of success, we would be largely unfitted to go on and fulfill the demands upon us today. He hides these things from us.
The majority of those who read this fourth volume in the Truett Memorial Series will readily agree that its title, The Salt of the Earth, is a good five-word description of the late Dr. George W. Truett. The functions of salt in the physical realm were abundantly illustrated by his life in social and spiritual realms. From early youth to the time of his death at the age of seventy-seven his moral earnestness, social grace, mental alertness and spiritual fervor were as healing, preserving, flavoring salt to the multitudes who came into vital contact with him. He never lost his savor. It is no matter of surprise that, during his forty-seven years as pastor of the First Baptist Church of Dallas, he imparted much of his spirit to that church which he so greatly loved. The candlestick still burns brightly there. The fourteen sermons in this volume are based on texts taken from the four Gospels, Acts and Revelation. They demonstrate the fact that Dr. Truett always preached for and expected prompt decisions from his auditors for Christ and His Church. He never hesitated to press the claims of Christ upon eternity-bound souls. To him the present was ever the day of salvation, the kingdom of heaven was at hand for all who had eyes to see, ears to hear and hearts to respond. He believed that the business of the soul, like the business of the king, required haste. That was one reason why his ministry was blessed with such immediate and lasting results. May this and the other volumes of the Truett Memorial Series serve the worthy purpose of extending in some measure the savor of George W. Truett's character and ministry. POWHATAN W. JAMES
To every soul in need of light and help; to every heart bowed under the weight of sin or grief or tears; to every one whose face is clothed upon with life's sunset glow; to every one tempted, discouraged sad-hearted or bereaved, this book is sent with the devout prayer that it may bring hope and comfort, and give them, each and all, new visions of the Master's grace and love.
UPDATE: Corrected typos The late Dr. Douglas Southall Freeman, Virginia's foremost citizen, editor, biographer and historian, in 1939 said of Dr. George W. Truett: "He is one of the most notable figures of twentieth-century Christianity-a man to whom, along with millions of Americans, I owe a debt in spirit." There were many reasons for Dr. Freeman's estimate, one of them being the fact that Dr. Truett ever proclaimed a very high standard of conduct for Christians and always practiced what he preached. Every sermon in this volume emphasizes some phase of Christian living, such as witnessing, resisting evil, obedience, dedication of life, stewardship, giving Christ first place. For this reason the title is given to this volume. Three sermons herein were first published in 1915 by Fleming H. Revell Co. of New York in a volume of sermons by Dr. George W. Truett which was compiled and edited by Dr. J. B. Cranfill. The title of that first volume of Dr. Truett's sermons was We Would See Jesus. It is now out of print and the Fleming H. Revell Company has graciously given permission to reprint these sermons in re-edited form. Your present compiler and editor greatly appreciates this favor, because these particular sermons seem to fit so well in After His Likeness and also because they are so worthy of reprinting. They are: "We Would See Jesus," "The Temptation of Our Saviour," and "The Supreme Gift to Jesus." That first volume of Truett sermons went through seventeen printings, a high tribute to the value of the messages therein. What was said of Abel may also be said of George W. Truett: "He being dead yet speaketh." Powhatan W. James. Dallas, Texas August 1, 1954

In the days of John Chrysostom, the golden mouthed preacher, the people said, "It were better for the sun to cease his shining than for John Chrysostom to cease his preaching." Something of that same feeling must be in our hearts today as we are called to face the exodus of the greatest preacher our State has ever known. How difficult it is to realize that B.H. Carroll has fallen on sleep! When did death ever deal Texas Baptists before such a staggering blow? Shall we ever see his like again? George W. Truett
