Les mots civilisation mycénienne, style mycénien, art mycénien, étaient encore inconnus quand, jeune membre de l'École française d'Athènes, en 1856, je gravis pour la première fois les pentes du coteau de Tirynthe et de la montagne de Mycènes. Si quelque archéologue s'était avisé alors de les employer, ils n'auraient pas présenté de sens nettement défini, tandis qu'aujourd'hui, pour tous ceux qui sont initiés à nos études, ils éveillent aussitôt la pensée d'une période bien déterminée et d'un ensemble de formes très particulières, qui en caractérisent l'architecture, la sculpture et la peinture, ainsi que toute l'industrie. La raison de ce changement est facile à saisir. De toutes les découvertes par lesquelles Schliemann s'est illustré, les plus importantes sont celles qu'il a faites à Mycènes même et elles ont confirmé la tradition antique: c'est bien Mycènes qui a été la capitale de l'État le plus puissant qui se soit constitué, avant l'invasion dorienne, dans la Grèce continentale.
