Tuttavia, nemmeno col freddo nè col tempaccio, Pompeo Barbetta, che per colazione s'era ben bene impinzato di panna e di burro, non avea voluto rinunziare alla sua passeggiata per fare il chilo, e mentre l'orologio della torre dei Mercanti batteva le dieci e mezzo, egli, lemme lemme, sbucava, tutto inferraiolato e col naso sepolto nel bavero, da una delle tante stradette che facevano capo in Piazza del Duomo.

Dopo, la cavallerizza aveva scritto meno, e Giacomino aveva sempre stracciato tutto. E quelle prime letterine tra il sentimentale e lo scherzoso, mezzo in francese, mezzo in italiano; scritte per lo piu per ringraziare di qualche regaluccio, finivano sempre con una stretta di mano, coi saluti pel signor Daniele. Bien des compliments a quel caro simpaticone, a monsieur votre pere. Maddalena, a tale scoperta, aveva riso del marito facendo una sdegnosa alzata di spalle, ma tutta la sua collera, anche la sua collera di moglie offesa, si riverso sul capo di Giacomino, del figlio scellerato. -E riuscito a depravare anche quell'innocente semplicione. Giacomo! Giacomo!-Essa lo aveva sempre preveduto. Ecco il pericolo della casa; la...
