Deidre's story begins on the beach or Bournemouth by the Sea, where horse-drawn cabin's were once drawn into the water to allow the ladies to change in discreet cloister. The story begins in 1895 during the reign of Her Majesty Queen Victoria. It leads to Deidre giving birth to ten legitimate children, her eleventh, a lingering unanswered question. Gerry Pratt's career took him from newspaper reporter to chairman and chief executive of what was at the time one of Oregon's largest Savings & Loan Associations with more than fifty in-store branches in Oregon and Alaska. During his career with the late Fred G. Meyer, he celebrated almost every Christmas and Birthday with his mentor and friend from 1960 through Meyer's death September 2, 1978. During that period they traveled extensively together through Alaska following the discovery of the Prudhoe Bay Oil fields, to the Orient, Mexico as well trips to Europe and New York exploring possibilities of long-term financing and meetings with analysts. Pratt was apprenticed in real estate under Meyer and served on the board of directors of the Fred Meyer Corp. as well as a director of the Meyer-owned, seven privately held real estate corporations. These experiences, along with his work with Business Week Magazine and extensive coverage of major mergers of retail organizations have led to this fictionalized story of the Merchants
The abiding truth about love is that it can and it does endure. It's World War II. A Canadian-born Japanese girl meets an Irish-bred Canadian boy, and they discover love in Vancouver, British Columbia. Separated by race, religion and war, their love is torn apart by the jingoistic fever of war that destroys the girl's home and challenges the boy's deep-seated commitment to the Roman Catholic Church. It is a story that sweeps a panoramic picture from the bitter streets of Belfast in Northern Ireland to feudal Japan; a tale of a seminarian's life and the life of a woman who learns to survive in a hostile land. Yet love, tested and challenged, never dies.

Two average parent's advice to others who are at the same point in the history of raising their own families. Two authors who are not perfect, but have learned from their mistakes. Perhaps others can take their advice and bypass the same painful lessons.
