Giovanni Boccaccio levede fra år 1313-1375, og var en betydelig figur i den italienske litteraturhistorie blandt grundlæggere af renæssancen. Boccaccio var en tidligere italiensk forfatter og digter, som adskiller sig fra sine samtidige ved at fremstille sine personer som realistiske, åndfulde og intelligente. Han er mest berømt af værket ‘Dekameron’, som også har kastet en indflydelse på andre forfattere, f. eks Francesco Petrarch, der oversatte Decameron til latin. Boccaccio har studeret jura og forretning i årevis, og udover at være forfatter var han også en humanist og blevet akkrediteret som grundlæggeren af humanismen.
