Der vorliegende Band umfat 73 Studien, Entwurfe, Aufzeichnungen des Zeitraums 1672 bis 1676 zu Differenzen, Folgen und Reihen mit Ausnahme der Texte zur Kreisreihe im engeren Sinne. Dazu gehoren neben den theoretischen Studien unter anderem Exzerpte und Anmerkungen zu de Saint-Vincent, G. Gosselin, M. Ricci und R. Fr. de Sluse, sowie mit E. W. von Tschirnhaus angefertigte Gesprachsnotizen. Nach seiner fruhen Beschaftigung mit der Kombinatorik sind die unendlichen Reihen das erste Gebiet der Mathematik, in dem Leibniz wissenschaftliche Erfolge erzielt: Im Herbst 1672 gelingt es ihm, die von Chr. Huygens gestellte Aufgabe der Summierung der unendlichen Reihe der reziproken Dreieckszahlen zu losen. Diese Anwendung seiner Differenzenmethode ermoglicht ihm auch, das Ergebnis auf die weiteren reziproken figurierten Zahlen auszudehnen und spater im harmonischen Dreieck suggestiv darzustellen. In Auseinandersetzung mit den Ergebnissen und Methoden von Galilei, Gregory, Mengoli, Mercator, Pascal und Wallis versucht er in der Folgezeit, die Tragkraft seines Ansatzes zu erforschen und seine Resultate zu systematisieren. Dabei behalt er immer die praktische Nutzanwendung im Blick, seien es Tafelwerke oder Wurzelalgorithmen zur Rechenerleichterung oder die Behandlung empirisch gewonnener Datenreihen wie bei der Messung der magnetischen Deklination. Zu den Hauptthemen gehort die Untersuchung der Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede der Summierung von diskreten und von kontinuierlichen Groen, die mit der Erfindung der Differential- und Integralrechnung ab Herbst 1675 besondere Bedeutung gewinnt. Einen weiteren Schwerpunkt bilden die damit in Zusammenhang stehenden Uberlegungen zum Unendlichen. Auerhalb der Bandthematik finden sich fruhe Belege fur die Einfuhrung der Termini Funktion und transzendent, in einem langeren Exkurs zu Rollkurven konstruiert Leibniz unbewut bereits die Kettenlinie und setzt sich kritisch mit den Ansichten von Descartes uber die in der Geometrie zulassigen Kurven auseinander.
