Laughter: An Essay On The Meaning Of The Comic is a philosophical work by Henri Bergson that explores the nature and purpose of humor. Bergson argues that laughter is a social phenomenon that arises from the tension between the mechanical and the living, and that it serves as a means of social criticism and moral education. He examines various forms of comedy, including slapstick, irony, and satire, and analyzes the ways in which they function to reveal the absurdities and contradictions of human behavior. The book also considers the relationship between laughter and the human condition, and how humor can be used as a tool for coping with life's challenges. Ultimately, Bergson suggests that laughter is a powerful force that can bring people together and help us to better understand ourselves and the world around us.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. What is the basal element in the laughable? What common ground can we find between the grimace of a merry-andrew, a play upon words, an equivocal situation in a burlesque and a scene of high comedy? What method of distillation will yield us invariably the same essence from which so many different products borrow either their obtrusive odour or their delicate perfume? The greatest of thinkers, from Aristotle downwards, have tackled this little problem, which has a knack of baffling every effort, of slipping away and escaping only to bob up again, a pert challenge flung at philosophic speculation. Our excuse for attacking the problem in our turn must lie in the fact that we shall not aim at imprisoning the comic spirit within a definition. We regard it, above all, as a living thing. However trivial it may be, we shall treat it with the respect due to life. We shall confine ourselves to watching it grow and expand. Passing by imperceptible gradations from one form to another, it will be seen to achieve the strangest metamorphoses. We shall disdain nothing we have seen. Maybe we may gain from this prolonged contact, for the matter of that, something more flexible than an abstract definition, -a practical, intimate acquaintance, such as springs from a long companionship.

An Introduction to Metaphysics is a philosophical work written by French philosopher Henri Bergson. The book explores the nature of reality and existence, and seeks to provide a framework for understanding the world around us. Bergson argues that the traditional methods of philosophy, which rely on logic and reason, are insufficient for understanding the complexities of existence. Instead, he suggests that we must embrace intuition and experience in order to truly understand the nature of reality. The book is divided into two parts, with the first part exploring the limitations of traditional philosophy and the second part outlining Bergson's own metaphysical framework. Throughout the book, Bergson challenges readers to question their assumptions about the world and to embrace a more holistic and experiential approach to understanding reality. An Introduction to Metaphysics is a seminal work in the field of philosophy and has had a significant influence on modern thought.1912. M. Bergson explains, at greater length and in greater detail than in the other books, exactly what he means to convey by the word intuition The intuitive method is treated independently and not, as elsewhere in his writings, incidentally, in its applications to particular problems. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.

The Creative Mind is a book written by Henri Bergson, a French philosopher and Nobel Prize winner. In this book, Bergson explores the concept of creativity and its relationship with the human mind. He argues that creativity is not merely a product of individual genius, but rather a fundamental aspect of human consciousness that is present in all of us. Bergson also examines the role of intuition, imagination, and memory in the creative process, and how they work together to produce new ideas and innovations. The book is divided into three parts, each of which explores a different aspect of creativity. In the first part, Bergson discusses the nature of creative intuition and how it differs from other forms of knowledge. In the second part, he explores the relationship between creativity and memory, and how memory can be used to stimulate new ideas. Finally, in the third part, Bergson examines the role of imagination in the creative process, and how it can be used to transcend the limitations of the present moment. Overall, The Creative Mind is a thought-provoking and insightful exploration of the nature of creativity and its place in the human experience. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. This little volume contains the discourse delivered by M. Bergson as President of the Académie des Sciences Morales et Politiques at its annual public meeting on December 12, 1914. It is the address which preceded the announcement of the prizes and awards bestowed by the Academy. It is now issued in book form with the consent of the author, and his full appreciation of the object, to give it the widest circulation. Although it is brief, it is a message addressed directly to the heart of our people in the crisis of war. To it is added a short article on the same theme, contributed to the Bulletin des Armées de la République, November 4, 1914. It has been said that war, with all its terrible evils, is the occasion of at least one good which humanity values as above price: it inspires great poetry. On the other hand, it seems to crush philosophy. Many may think that in this message it is poetry to which M. Bergson is giving expression. It is, however, from the depth of his philosophy that the inspiration is drawn. The full significance of the doctrines he has been teaching, and their whole moral and political bearing, are brought into clear light, focussed, as it were, on the actual present struggle. Yet is there no word that breathes hatred to any person or to any race. It is by the triumph of a spiritual principle that philosophy may hope to free humanity from the oppression of a materialist doctrine.

The Multiplicity Of Conscious States And The Idea Of Duration is a philosophical work by French philosopher Henri Bergson. The book explores the nature of consciousness and the concept of duration, which Bergson argues is a fundamental aspect of human experience that cannot be captured by traditional notions of time. Bergson examines the different ways in which we experience the world around us, including our perceptions, emotions, and memories, and how these experiences shape our understanding of reality. He also discusses the limitations of scientific methods in understanding consciousness and duration, arguing that these concepts can only be fully grasped through intuition and personal experience. The book is an important contribution to the field of philosophy and has been influential in shaping modern discussions on the nature of consciousness and time.THIS 70 PAGE ARTICLE WAS EXTRACTED FROM THE BOOK: Time and Free Will: An Essay on the Immediate Data of Consciousness, by Henri Bergson.
