French philosopher Henri Bergson produced four major works in his lifetime, the second of which, "Matter and Memory", is a philosophical and complex nineteenth century exploration of human nature and the spirituality of memory. In this work, Bergson investigates the function of the brain, and opposes the idea of memory being of a material nature, lodged within a particular part of the nervous system. He makes a claim early in this essay that matter and memory are dualistic, leading to a careful consideration of the problems in the relation of body and mind. His theories on sense, dualism, pure perception, concept of virtuality, and famous image of the memory cone often make Bergson's essay a confusing and challenging existentialist work. However, the years of research and extensive pathological investigations spent in preparation for this and other essays have gained Bergson great distinction as a brilliant, though unjustly neglected, theorist and philosopher. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper and follows the translation of Nancy Margaret Paul and W. Scott Palmer.

"Laughter: An Essay on the Meaning of the Comic" is French philosopher Henri Bergson's treatise on laughter and the timeless role of comedy in human society. Originally published in three parts in French in 1900 and translated into English in 1924, Bergson makes three essential observations about laughter and comedy. First, that comedy is a necessary human behavior and acts as a sort of caricature or parody of essential human activities and behaviors. Second, laughter is a cerebral function that requires an emotional detachment from the subject as it is hard to laugh at things that appear very important or serious. Finally, Bergson contends that laughter plays an important social function in both bringing people together and in setting some apart. This fascinating and thought-provoking examination of what makes us laugh and why it is an essential feature of human interaction is a compelling, quick read, and is a must for any aspiring comedian or humor writer. Anyone interested in a greater understanding of the importance and function of humor in human society will also find much of interest in this enduringly popular treatise. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper and follows the translation of Cloudesley Brereton and Fred Rothwell.

A volume of Bergson's lectures and essays on the theory and philosophy of consciousness and memory, originally published in 1920. These articles were selected by the author with the view of illustrating his concept that reality is fundamentally and spiritual activity. Contents include: 'Life and Consciousness', 'The Soul and the body', 'Phantasms of the Living and Physical Research', 'Dreams', 'Memory of the Present and False Recognition', 'Intellectual Effort', and 'Brain and Thought: A Philosophical Illusion'. This classic work is being republished now in a new edition complete with a chapter From "Bergson And His Philosophy" by J. Alexander Gunn. Henri-Louis Bergson (1859-1941) was a French-Jewish philosopher. He had a significant influence on the tradition of continental philosophy during the first half of the twentieth century until World War II, and is famous for his idea that immediate experience and intuition are more important than abstract rationalism and science for understanding the nature of reality.

Reprint of 1911 English Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Matter and Memory is one of the four main works by the French philosopher Henri Bergson (1859-1941). Its subtitle is "Essay on the relation of body and spirit", and the book presents an analysis of the classical philosophical problems concerning this relation. Within that framework the analysis of memory serves the purpose of clarifying the problem. Matter and Memory was written in reaction to the book The Maladies of Memory by Théodule Ribot, that appeared in 1881. Ribot claimed that the findings of brain science proved that memory is lodged within a particular part of the nervous system; localized within the brain and thus being of a material nature. Bergson was opposed to this reduction of spirit to matter. Defending a clear anti-reductionist position, he considered memory to be of a deeply spiritual nature; the brain serving the need of orienting present action by inserting relevant memories.
