Le régime féodal de la Chine ancienne est très mal connu. Les documents contemporains sont rares et peu explicites : les inscriptions, difficiles à déchiffrer, et le plus souvent d¿une brièveté qui les rend très obscures, ne sont pas toujours compréhensibles pour nous, lorsqüelles sortent des formules banales et parlent de faits que nous ignorons. Quant aux documents littéraires (101), remontant à l¿époque féodale, Yi-king (Livre de Divination), Che-king (Livre des Odes), Chou-king (Livre des Documents), ils ne mentionnent les institutions qüen passant. Confucius et Mo-tseu ont vu la fin des temps féodaux, mais Confucius n¿a laissé aucun écrit et ses Entretiens (Louen-yu) ont été rédigés par ses disciples un siècle au moins après sa mort ; et quant à Mo-tseu, son ¿uvre a été retouchée par ses disciples pendant les deux siècles suivants. Les textes historiques les plus anciens, Tch¿ouen-ts¿ieou et Tchou-chou ki-nien, sont, au plus tôt des derniers temps de ce régime, alors qüil n¿en subsistait plus guère que quelques formes extérieures ; et d¿ailleurs, ce sont des chroniques très sèches qui ne nous apprennent presque rien. Les livres qui fournissent le plus de renseignements sont les Rituels (Li-ki, Tcheou-li) et les grands ouvrages historiques (Tso-tchouan, Kouo-yu) ; mais ils sont très tardifs (IIIe siècle A. C.) et au temps où ils furent écrits, le régime féodal antique avait entièrement disparu. Le Li-ki (Mémoires sur les Rites) est un recueil d¿opuscules ritualistes confucéens rédigés, les plus anciens, à la fin du IVe siècle, les plus récents, au début du Ier siècle avant notre ère ; les lettrés qui les ont composés ont utilisé les traditions relatives à l¿antiquité pour construire un régime utopique de gouvernement en complétant systématiquement en séries régulières les faits conformes à leurs théories, et en laissant de côté les autres. Le Tcheou-li (Rituel des Tcheou), d¿autre part, est une glorification du pouvoir royal qui lui aussi pousse la systématisation très loin, mais qui a l¿avantage de ne pas avoir fait subir aux faits de déformation confucianiste. Le Tso-tchouan et le Kouo-yu apportent des documents moins travaillés ; ils sont fondés en grande partie sur des ouvrages plus anciens ; et comme ils ne cherchent pas à faire du ritualisme systématique, ils déforment moins les faits que les Rituels. De tous ces ouvrages, le plus facile à consulter est le Li-ki dont certains chapitres, surtout avec leurs Commentaires, sont très clairs et très précis ; aussi est-ce de lui qüon s¿est le plus souvent servi pour décrire les institutions féodales chinoises anciennes. Mais, en dehors des rites et des cérémonies usuels et courants, c¿est la source la moins sûre : s¿il contient certainement des faits vrais, nous n¿avons aucun critérium pour les distinguer des faits d¿imagination. J¿ai donc entièrement laissé de côté ce livre ; je me suis servi avant tout des inscriptions, ainsi que du Che-king, du Chou-king, du Yi-king, documents contemporains des faits étudiés, et même aussi des historiens (y compris le Tso-tchouan, malgré sa date récente), en ne tenant compte que des faits matériels, mais non des interprétations et des explications qüils peuvent donner.
