Y seguiendo su viaje fueron a dar a la dicha tierra intitulada de Yucatán a la punta della, que estará sesenta o setenta leguas de la dicha isla Fernandina y desta tierra de la Rica Villa de la Vera Cruz donde nosotros en nombre de Vuestras Reales Altezas estamos, en la cual saltó en un pueblo que se dice Campoche, donde al señor dél pusieron por nombre Lázaro y allí le dieron dos máscaras con una tela de oro por cima y otras cosillas de oro. Y porque los naturales de la dicha tierra no los consintieron estar en el pueblo y tierra se partieron de allá y se fue la costa abajo hasta diez leguas, donde tornó a saltar en tierra junto a otro pueblo que se llama Mochocobon y el señor dél Champoton. Y allí fueron bien rescebidos de los naturales de la tierra, mas no los consintieron entrar en su pueblo y aquella noche durmieron los españoles fuera de las naos en tierra. Y viendo esto los naturales de aquella tierra, pelearon otro día por la mañana con ellos en tal manera que murieron veinteséis es pañoles y fueron heridos todos los otros. Y finalmente, viendo el capitán Francisco Fernández de Córdoba esto, escapó con los que le quedaron con acogerse a las naos.

The publications of the Hakluyt Society (founded in 1846) made available edited (and sometimes translated) early accounts of exploration. The first series, which ran from 1847 to 1899, consists of 100 books containing published or previously unpublished works by authors from Christopher Columbus to Sir Francis Drake, and covering voyages to the New World, to China and Japan, to Russia and to Africa and India. This 1868 volume contains the first English translation of Hernan Cortes' 1526 report to Emperor Charles V on his expedition from Mexico to Honduras to subdue the rebellion in the Spanish colony which had been founded there. The colony was used to supply native workers for the Spanish Caribbean plantations, and was a recurring source of trouble for its overlords. The early years of Spanish colonisation in Central and South America were marked by power-struggles between the Conquistadors themselves, as this account shows.
