  • - with Reward Reinforcement
    af Hertha James
    98,95 kr.

Well-illustrated, this book presents ideas and tools to teach your horse about foot care in a way that allows him to retain relaxation and confidence. All the exercises are shaped with reward reinforcement (clicker training). The book starts with tasks that ensure we have the foundations skills on which to build confident foot care. It continues with exercises that enhance the horse's foot awareness and balance. Links to relevant YouTube video clips accompany the book. Horse foot care is an interesting topic because horses have understandable fear about their feet being compromised. At the same time, people have a natural fear about getting hurt if the horse gets upset. The purpose of this book is to enable relaxation and confidence at both ends of the lead rope. For a person new to horses, or a person dealing with a horse who has been traumatized with past foot handling procedures, this book packs a lot of useful information.

Do you want to do something new with your horse but you're not sure how to start? Using examples, Hertha guides you from a vague training idea to a teaching and learning program that you custom-design for yourself and a particular horse. It is a process than everyone can learn. The approach is one of 'constructing' or creating the responses we want our horse to know so he can lead a safe, relaxed life in our care. This book shows us how to teach by focusing on what we can do together, not what we can't do yet. For everything we want to teach, there will be starting point where the handler and the horse can be successful together. A good Training Plan begins with a task clearly defined in terms of observable behavior. The task is then broken down into parts small enough so that each part is in easy reach of the horse and handler's capabilities as they progress through their program. Hertha also shows how to incorporate clicker training (positive or reward reinforcement) into what we would like to do with our horses. This book is a superb addition to Hertha's 'Life Skills for Horses' series.

Teaching long-reining has a variety of purposes. We may want to: - Keep small ponies and donkeys active and interested. - Develop a young horse's education about voice and rein signals for walk on, halt, back up, turn left and turn right before he is old enough to ride. - Prepare our horse, pony, donkey, mule for work in harness. - Have another horse activity we can do without riding. - Build a timid horse's confidence about moving out in front, as he must do when ridden. - Keep an older or retired horse supple with low-key activities. - Be able to send the horse out ahead of us over, between and through obstacles for non-ridden Horse Agility competitions. This book isolates the foundation skills needed for long-reining and arranges them into a Training Program. On completion of the program, long-reining falls into place smoothly as all the elements are brought together. If you do not yet use positive reinforcement in the form of equine clicker training, the book includes a full chapter on how to get started safely. The final chapter includes nineteen patterns to generalize and consolidate the long-reining skills of the handler and the horse. Over a hundred illustrations plus free links to more than twenty short YouTube video clips support the written text.

Although every person's knee replacement is unique, we can draw useful information from each experience. This story traces the six months following a double knee replacement by a 69-year-old woman unwilling to give up the activities she loves - walking, spending time with her horse and playing with the grandchildren.

The Universal Horse Language program can be done alongside anything else you are already doing with your horse. If you are interested in liberty work, it is a brilliant introduction to staying safe and having fun. Universal Horse Language guides you through a series of eight exercises done with the horse at liberty in a large roomy area. The exercises begin with quiet sharing of time and space. The last exercise can become a high energy frolic with your horse. Each exercise flows into the next one as the horse and handler get to know each other's body language. Body language is the first language of horses, so it makes sense for us to learn the natural body language of horses. Because horses already know these things, this book is about training handlers rather than training horses. Learning and using the Universal Horse Language exercises is a superb way to set 'dates' with a horse. Since all horses 'speak' the same language, we have a way of communicating with any horse. We can use it to begin a new relationship or strengthen an existing one. Once we learn it, we will never forget it. This book is another excellent addition to Hertha's 'Life Skills for Horses' series.

  • - Short Routines for Mind and Muscle
    af Hertha James
    153,95 kr.

Many people enjoy the company of their horse, pony, donkey or mule without ever riding. Many people enjoy doing groundwork as well as riding. This book is for all of you.The routines in this book are unique because they require no 'gear' other than a fence line or a set of six rags to act as focal points. It contains links to prerequisite skills in case these need to be taught or improved to get the most out of a routine. While there are twelve routines in the book, you may find many months-worth of training to hone the individual skills that make up the routines. Each routine is designed to sharpen handler and horse skills by chaining a series of mobility exercises into a fluid routine. The primary focus is to maintain and build the horse's confidence. Maintaining confidence and willingness to try again is always more important than achieving a routine. The routine itself is an end-point to give a purpose for teaching all the elements required. If we are consistent and keep the fun in our work, we end up with a horse that is light as a feather in response to the clear signals we have developed.

This ninth book in the Life Skills for Horses series looks at ways we can learn to be more precise with our body language. When we strive to cut the static or 'noise' out of our body language, the horse will begin to notice that our body orientation, our breathing, our gestures and our energy level can indeed be significant.Horses are expert readers of each other's body language. Even across considerable distance, the flick of an ear expresses a whole sentence. As a horse gets to know a person, he applies the same skill to reading that person's body language. As we learn to remain relaxed and be totally consistent with the way we communicate, we enable the horse to correctly read even our smallest intent. This illustrated book outlines twelve Training Plans that can be developed into Individual Education Programs to suit each specific horse and handler partnership. If you are new or new-ish to equine clicker training (positive reinforcement training), the first chapter details how to get started. The book includes an extensive glossary explaining concepts in everyday language. Each chapter has links to free YouTube video clips that help explain the tasks.

  • - The Eight Leading Positions
    af Hertha James
    178,95 kr.

This well-illustrated book is a treasure trove of information for every horse lover. Many horse and pony owners are realizing that a great deal of fun can be had by interacting with horses on the ground. For riders, the ground work creates a superb foundation for riding. For those who are no longer able to ride or have no desire to ride, and for people who love little ponies, this book is a gold mine of ideas to keep both horses and humans active, amused and learning new things. The term 'leading positions' refers to all the ways we orientate ourselves in relation to the horse in order to orchestrate where we would like him to put his feet. Becoming tuned in to the various leading positions enhances the conversations we can have with our horses. This book meshes nicely with the author's previous two books: How to Begin Equine Clicker Training and Conversations with Horses. Both are available from Amazon. Each leading position is looked at in comprehensive detail. The book contains 20 Training Plans that can be adapted to suit individual horses, ponies, donkeys and mules. The concepts in the book are further illustrated with links to video clips that demonstrate the Training Plans in action. Walking with Horses includes background for training with positive reinforcement. It covers all the essentials to make our equine interactions safe and enjoyable for both parties. Walking with Horses is a fine addition to the 'Life Skills for Horses' series.

  • - Improving horse-human communication
    af Hertha James
    168,95 kr.

This book clearly outlines what is involved with clicker training horses. Positive reinforcement is explained with photographs and further illustrated with many short, free YouTube video clips. It contains eight detailed Training Plan outlines ready for use to set up education programs for individual horses. Techniques such as 'free-shaping' are clearly described without delving into scientific terminology. Positive reinforcement training is rapidly challenging many traditional ideas about horse training. This book shows how equine clicker training opens a host of new possibilities by letting a horse know when he is are right, rather than telling him when he is wrong. It shows how clicker training adds a new dimension to horsemanship. The handler and the horse learn the new clicker training language together. Clicker training does not mean you have to click and treat every task forever. The book explains how it is a technique you can use to communicate more accurately what you would like the horse to learn. It encourages you to turn general Training Plans into Individual Education Programs custom-made to exactly suit the horse you are working with.

When I was no longer able to ride, I embarked on the challenge of teaching my horse to work in harness. I wanted to see how far we could get using clicker training, which was such fun. This illustrated book contains the detail of my planning for this project. The plans guided me through careful consideration of all the mini-skills involved with: -Long-reining.-Handler dragging strange things on a rope.-Staying parked in narrow spaces.-Stepping back into tight dead-end spaces.-Rope and stick relaxation.-Familiarity with the harness at different gaits.-Pulling tires - traces but no shafts.-Walking beside the cart pulled by human helpers.-Familiarity with the idea of shafts.-Hitching up and driving at home.-Generalize to different places. The key was to expand the horse's comfort zone slowly by making sure she always knew what to do to earn her next click&treat. I filmed each step of the process and the book includes links to the video clips.
